Sent to me by a good friend, A federal appellate court has declared that prayer at Greece town board meetings is construed as an endorsement of Christianity.

Keep our Midwives working

You have a chance to make a difference, once again, in the realm of legislation regarding childbirth in this country.  At Freeourwidwives.org you can find the tools you need to call your state senator and assembly person and offer your support for the Midwifery Modernization Act.

We have arrived at the final phase of getting the Midwifery Modernization Act passed. Thanks to your amazing outpouring of support the bill was moved out of the Higher Education Committee last week. Now it is poised to be brought to a full vote in the Assembly and Senate. This is the moment!

Lincoln, Lincoln, I’ve been thinkin’…

…your policies are really stinkin’!

It’s time for Blanche Lincoln to leave the US Senate and it’s up to us to make sure that it happens.  Bill Halter could use your help with the Arkansas Run-off election, this Tuesday.   Calls can be made from home to voters in Arkansas to send Lincoln packing.  From Halter’s campaign:

In less than 2 weeks, voters in Arkansas will start going to the polls to choose between incumbent Blanche Lincoln and progressive challenger Bill Halter. If you’ve been waiting to get involved, now is the time — can you sign up to make easy calls to Bill Halter supporters? We’re reminding them to vote.

You can call from home, all you need is a phone and a little time.

It’s time to send the message to Washington that the progressives are sick of corporate owned Senators and Congressman.  In the words of Governor Howard Dean, “You have the power”.

Sign onto “The War is Making You Poor” bill

Is it just me, or does everyone feel that you just don’t have an extra nickle to spend?

Congressman Alan Grayson from Florida has introduced “The War is Making You Poor” bill and you can be a citizen sponsor for the bill by signing here.

From an email, forwarded by a friend:

Next year’s budget allocates $159,000,000,000 to perpetuate the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq. That’s enough money to eliminate federal income taxes for the first $35,000 of every American’s income. Beyond that, leaves over $15 billion to cut the deficit.

And that’s what this bill does. It eliminates separate funding for the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, and eliminates federal income taxes for everyone’s first $35,000 of income ($70,000 for couples). Plus it pays down the national debt. Does that sound good to you? Then please sign our petition in support of this bill, and help us build a movement to end our permanent state of war.
[snip]

The costs of the war have been rendered invisible. There’s no draft. Instead, we take the most vulnerable elements of our population, and give them a choice between unemployment and missile fodder. Government deficits conceal the need to pay in cash for the war.

We put the cost of both guns and butter on our Chinese credit card. In fact, we don’t even put these wars on budget; they are still passed using ‘emergency supplemental’. A nine-year ‘emergency’.

Let’s show Congress the cost of these wars is too much for us.

Action Alert to save midwifery in NY City and NY State

From an email received yesterday, please take the time to act.
We need your help!

At midnight tomorrow, April 30th, the majority of New York City’s home birth midwives will no longer be able to practice legally.  Unless immediate action is taken by the Governor and the NYS Department of Health the women that these midwives serve will be denied access to a home birth with their chosen provider and these providers will no longer be able to practice legally in NYS.

YOU MUST ACT NOW to save the home birth option for New York Women:
Call:
  • 311
  • Wendy Saunders, Executive Deputy Commissioner for the NY State Department of Health, appointed by Governor Paterson. 518-474-8390
  • Larry Mokhiber, he Secretary of the Board of Midwifery (518-474-3817, extension 130)
And say….

With the closing of St. Vincent’s Hospital, half of the licensed, highly trained home birth midwives serving NYC have lost their Written Practice Agreement (WPA).   St Vincent’s was the only Hospital in the city supportive of a woman’s right to choose a home birth and willing to sign a WPA.  In the weeks since it’s announced closure, these midwives have reached out to hospitals and obstetricians all across the city looking for support, with no success.  Please help us to save the homebirth option in New York.

Please Join us! We need your help.

Photo borrowed from the Photography Project through the Free our Midwives Site. Click here for more information, more photos, and to learn how to submit your own photos to this great project.

We are in our final hours! Please forward this email and help us flood 311 and the Governor’s office with calls supporting home birth.

And while you’re at it, please sign our petition supporting the Midwifery Modernization Act which will remove the WPA from the midwifery law effectively removing this barrier to accessing midwifery care.

See NYSALM’s fact sheet about what the Midwifery Modernization Act Means for You.
