And so it starts…..
We knew this was coming, but how quickly it begins! From the Washington Post:
Spitzer’s PAC, which he founded last year, gave $2,300 to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-N.Y.) presidential campaign last May. He has made contributions to three Democratic House members from the Empire State — Reps. Michael Arcuri, Kirsten Gillibrand and John Hall. And Spitzer contributed to two high-profile New York congressional candidates — Dan Maffei and Eric Massa.
The GOP attacks on those candidates have already begun. Within hours of the Spitzer story breaking, the National Republican Congressional Committee put out a press release headlined, “Will Kirsten Gillibrand Return Spitzer’s Sleazy Money?” followed by identical releases on Arcuri, Massa, Maffei and Hall.

Of course the REAL campaign contributions issues never seem to get brought up with these people, do they?
So if it’s going to be an issue just give the money back and fast. It’s probably not worth letting them score their talking points for a few dollars. The show will be on the other foot in no time.
[...] NRCC is meanwhile spinning this completely out of control, as is there wont. Josh at TPM, ladkiddo at RT and the Washington Post all pick up on their mailers. These mailers screech that every single [...]
WTF? That’s craziness.
Sleazy money? Technically it would be sleazy had Spitzer made it by way of prostitution. By paying for sex, it does not make all his money sleazy. Now, if the hooker gave money to these candidates, then it could be construed as sleazy money.
This is an unconscionable move by the Republicans and their surrogates in the blogs. It’s clear that they have absolutely no ethics or morals… why don’t they talk about John McCain’s adultery if they’re so interested in this topic.
Nobody, who took campaign contributions from Spitzer, knew this was going on and the Republicans have no ethics by implying that they did.
for the very close races, I think it would probably be wise to give the money back. that kills the story. and these folks can move on.
I think it’s probably already been done, or donated to some charity. And, one would hope that “that would be that”. But, probably not so. Next the photos will come out- presidential candidate, or congress person, or congress person wannabee, standing with Eliot. The implication being guilt by association. We understand this plot line.
good point.
a (slight) positive to all this - at least if you are an Obama supporter - is that at least Hillary will have one less superdelegate now……Paterson is a Clinton supporter, but is already a superdelegate as a DNC member.
What could be “sleazier” than owning a company, getting the internal bids for contract, being awarded the contract, getting millions in COMIDA funding and then dumping thousands of dollars (of record, not including what gets paid under the table) to the Friends of Maggie campaign?
In itself, a form of corporate prostitution, since all you need is someone willing to pay a whore in exchange for the pleasure.

So if they gave the money back to Spitzer, what would he do with it? It’s not like he’ll ever need it to run for elected office ever again! (Oh, wait .. I just remembered Marion Barry… nevermind)
