1. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Some children need families to love
November 25, 2007 •• 633 words •• ID: elm46529148
November is National Adoption Month, so imagine how it would be coming upon one of the most family-oriented seasons feeling desperate — not for elaborate meals or fancy gifts, but for a family to share it with. Do you have room in your heart to give a home to a child? There are so many children, even sibling groups and teenagers, waiting for a chance at a home just like yours. You can give hope to these children. We are a foster and adoptive family in Chemung County. At first we

2. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Elmira should sell share of First Arena
November 7, 2007 •• 1124 words •• ID: elm45804408
Attempts to sell Mark Twain Golf Course now appear in limbo with a fair chance that it will never happen. Southern Tier Economic Development is presently little more than landlord of First Arena and the only landlord I know that receives absolutely no rent. If nothing is changed, Elmira taxpayers will have to pay about $5 million more on the HUD loan, which will make the total paid by Elmira taxpayers almost $8 million. If STED's, read Elmira's, portion of the arena

3. Agreeably deciding to disagree
October 28, 2007 •• 615 words •• ID: elm45521296
Twin Tiers voters are pretty good sports when it comes to politics. They play to win, but win or lose, after the match is over, they tend to move on. At least that's the view from political observers and activists contacted for today's monthly tolerance installment in the Star-Gazette. The favorable views mean that despite shrill campaign rhetoric and even some occasional political chicanery, voters — the ones who make the final decision —

4. Politics form a polite divide
October 28, 2007 •• 1841 words •• ID: elm45520952
While the Southern Tier has no shortage of political opinions, the region seems comparatively tolerant of various viewpoints, observers say. That doesn't mean political positions aren't deeply held and that perceptions of tolerance don't differ. But people largely feel free to express themselves without fear of being socially ostracized or even physically attacked, particularly when it comes to the local level of government. "I really

Southern Tier Eric Massa No. 35 in Esquire's top 100 Eric Massa of Corning, Democratic candidate for the 29th Congressional District seat in 2008, has been listed as No. 35, "The Angry Citizen," in Esquire Magazine's second annual top 100 list. In August, Massa gave an interview with the magazine under the impression that he would get a brief account, according to a news release he issued Tuesday. Instead, he was surprised to receive a

8. Kuhl's unspoken war support
August 29, 2007 •• 496 words •• ID: elm43411522
President Bush and U.S. Rep. John R. Kuhl Jr., R-Hammondsport, have sunk to new lows by invoking the image of the Vietnam conflict to justify continued American military involvement in what is really a three-way ethnic civil war in Iraq. Those who never served in the military (President Bush served intermittently and insufficiently in the National Guard and Kuhl had draft deferments during the Vietnam conflict) are now touting the wrong lessons learned from that terrible, embittering
