LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Some children need families to love
November 25, 2007 •• 633 words •• ID: elm46529148
November is National Adoption Month, so imagine how it would be coming upon one of the most family-oriented seasons feeling desperate — not for elaborate meals or fancy gifts, but for a family to share it with. Do you have room in your heart to give a home to a child? There are so many children, even sibling groups and teenagers, waiting for a chance at a home just like yours. You can give hope to these children. We are a foster and adoptive family in Chemung County. At first we

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Elmira should sell share of First Arena
November 7, 2007 •• 1124 words •• ID: elm45804408
Attempts to sell Mark Twain Golf Course now appear in limbo with a fair chance that it will never happen. Southern Tier Economic Development is presently little more than landlord of First Arena and the only landlord I know that receives absolutely no rent. If nothing is changed, Elmira taxpayers will have to pay about $5 million more on the HUD loan, which will make the total paid by Elmira taxpayers almost $8 million. If STED's, read Elmira's, portion of the arena

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Taxpayers' money being used on wrong causes
October 26, 2007 •• 843 words •• ID: elm45461474
I never cease to be surprised at the Star-Gazette's support of the spending of large sums of taxpayers' money on the restoration of vacant buildings in a dead and decaying urban area. These expenditures can be masked in any one of a dozen ways — grants, credits, historic rehab and so on. But when all is said and done, it is still money out of taxpayers' pockets, whether from federal, state or local sources. No answer is made as to who is going to

Murtha's brave stand is no joke
December 19, 2005 •• 690 words •• ID: elm19646062
In the roiling aftermath of U.S. Rep. John Murtha's call to bring American troops home from Iraq - a declaration I should be celebrating - all I want to do is lock my hands over my ears. With the American political arena charged the way it is, making this sort of statement is tantamount to shouting "Boston rules!" in Yankee Stadium. It doesn't take long for the peanuts and beer cans to start flying. * "What Congressman Murtha [did] was

What's in a hurricane name? Controversy
October 23, 2005 •• 459 words •• ID: elm18041998
There have been so many tropical storms this year, scientists are running out of names for them. New storms will be named for letters in the Greek alphabet. That could lead to headlines that sound like college frat parties: "Hurricane Alpha Gamma Epsilon Ravages Gulf Coast. Thousands Left Awash in Beer, Togas and Hangovers." In 1953, the National Hurricane Center began naming storms. Tropical Storm Alice was the first. Female names were used because male scientists

Living in Elmira changed Twain

" Author's views on social justice were reshaped after he married into Langdon family. By BROOKE J. SHERMAN Star-Gazette bsherman@stargazette.com Many know of Mark Twain the humorist, the world traveler, the famed orator, but not many know Mark Twain the socialjustice advocate. Much of Twain's writings at first blush appear to be humorous satires on American society, but beneath the surface, much of his work spoke deeply of the injustices of

Beijing causes homesickness for political freedom
November 8, 2004 •• 742 words •• ID: elm2004110910291221
" Presidential campaign reactions wouldn't be allowed in China. For many Americans, last Tuesday wasn't just Election Day, it was Independence Day. The airwaves were suddenly liberated from the gaggles of political commentators who scurried back into their holes until 2008. However, I'm glad the vermin will be back in another four years. I spent five weeks last summer in Beijing, China, on an exchange program through the American Field

Democrats offer contrasting styles Alderson marches to a beat of his own " He relishes role as political outsider. By JIM PFIFFER Star-Gazette jpfiffer@stargazette.com Jeremy Alderson doesn't like politics and isn't your typical politician. But he's running for Congress. If that sounds like Alderson is confused, be assured he's not. Just ask the the 55-year-old Democrat from Hector. He'll explain

Faith and friends in a time of need
July 30, 2004 •• 714 words •• ID: elm2004073009000021
On July 9 my son, Ryan Clark, took the hand of God and went home. It wasn't until Ryan was lowered into the ground that the impact of his passing really hit me. Not in the sense that I would never see him again, because I will. But in the sense of the love and encouragement that surrounded me in the sense of faith, family and friends. There are no words to properly thank those who have been at my side throughout the life of my son. The love and encouragement shown through faith,

July 25, 2004 •• 815 words •• ID: elm2004072612421777
Of all the gifts that we can bestow on the children of our community, the gift of reading ranks high on the list. And thank you to the Star-Gazette for your tremendous effort in launching the Need to Read program in June and securing donations of more than 16,000 gently used and new books. The books collected through the book drive will be given to children and families throughout the Chemung Valley through the Family Reading Partnership of Chemung Valley Bright Red Bookshelf Program.
