Arrested in DC. The LGBT Community stands up for repeal of DADT

Well, I am just so jealous.  Not only did our very own Anne Tischer get arrested, but she also had the opportunity to listen to Howard Dean speaking on behalf of her cause.  Anyway, I’ll let her engage us with her own story…
I headed to Washington DC this past weekend to participate in the “Repeal [...]

Monserrate will be primary challenged, Pride approved

Last week, the New York State Senate, in all it’s glory, voted to validate discrimination against gays. In what could be considered a bit of a blow-out, the senate voted down marriage equality.
This week, the Pride Agenda, led by Alan Van Capelle, has endosed Jose Peralta as a primary challenger to Hiram Monserrate.  From the [...]

Our representative democracy at work-Maine’s got nothin on NYS

Anne Tischer just sent me this video of a town-hall with Senator Maziarz (operative syllable-arz).   He doesn’t even look at Anne when he “answers” her question.  This is what we’re up against.  His non-answer gets applause from the crowd. (H/T to Anne and Bess):
I’m not going to write too much about it, except to say, [...]

Prop 8 rally- more pics and words from Anne

The Join the Impact rally, despite the rain, was awesome – real energy
and spontaneity, cars honking and lots of waving and cheers.
The college kids led the chants, Ove Overmyer controlled the media,
Bess and Neil Houghton did sound bites and I bossed the crowd around…

But mostly it was just people and families standing in the rain
saying [...]

Thank you Governor Paterson!

Governor Paterson made an historic decision yesterday and declared that all government agencies recognize and support same-sex marriages as they would any heterosexual marriages. Lgbtfogg has the story too (h/t Jiminybizbo). Watch the video here.
At about the 2:20 mark, Paterson says, “I am directing agency heads that we will recognize marriages conducted outside [...]

Gay Marriage Ban overturned in California

Will the Golden State become the Rainbow State? The second state in the union to sanction same sex marriages, California’s LGBT population and their supporters were jubilant today:
Outside the courthouse, gay marriage supporters cried and cheered as news spread of the decision.
The city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples and gay [...]

One more reason to celebrate!

It’s official! The appellate court’s decision stands in New York State. Read it and weep, oh Maggie of the Very Closed Mind:
Today, New York’s highest court handed down a victory for many gay and lesbian couples throughout the state by letting stand an appellate court’s groundbreaking ruling that recognized same-sex couples’ valid out-of-state marriages.
“Today’s [...]

LGBT Equality and Justice Day, a guest essay by Anne Tischer

I had wanted to be a part of this trip, but new responsibilities as a full-time employee have put a crimp in my activism. Thanks to Anne and Bess for this great synopsis, complete with pictures:

On Tuesday, April 29, at the ungodly hour of 5am, 4 busloads [...]

Rochester’s first Annual LGBT Wedding Expo (and I was there!)

Wow, Rochester continues the tradition in being the first for civil rights movements. This Gala Event offered a great opportunity for a night on the town, and to be part of history in the making. I want to thank the organizers for giving me the chance to document this important happening for RT and for [...]

D&C Equal Marriage Op-Ed Smackdown

So, you know how the D&C likes to have these op-ed faceoff things where “both sides” of an issue are presented? This time the issue is Equal Marriage (the competing pieces are here and here), probably prompted by Spitzer’s recent introduction of a bill giving gay marriages equal rights to hetero marriages.
Sometimes, with these [...]
