Marcellus Shale Moratorium
There is a bill in Albany that will freeze natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale formation. It seems to have support in the Senate, but you should call your local Senators to encourage them to support the moratorium. It isn’t a law until it is passed and Gov Paterson signs it.
I’ve already said that the drilling will kill local residents. There are spills and incidents in PA where drilling has been on going. “Incidents” - such a sterile term. Like the BP “incident” in the Gulf of Mexico.
Well, the PA Incident is a 16 hour spew in a remote area where…
PENFIELD, Pa. — A blowout at a natural-gas well in a remote area shot explosive gas and polluted water as high as 75 feet into the air before crews were able to tame it more than half a day later, officials said Friday.
If you read the article - they diverted airplanes because of the on the ground spill. Then you can read this blogger’s account of a site visit.
Where does 16 hours worth of ‘not fit for anyone’s consumption’ hydrofracking fluid go? Well, into the water supply - eventually. Then there are the strong odors in various PA counties, draining of streams (fracking uses a lot of water) and probably lots more.

When calling local Senators, it wouldn’t hurt to mention (especially if their district has any Marcellus shale in it) that FHA and many banks and credit unions won’t approve a mortgage or other loan for land where there is a gas drilling lease, or where there is a building within 300 feet of a piece of property with a gas drilling lease. In other words, if your neighbor signs a gas drilling lease, and you have a building within 300 feet of the property line, the value of your property could drop to zero.
So much for property values.
Call your Senator find out where they stand on this.
Wonder where Senator Joe Robach stands on this?
