Rochester Press: Looking for Significance in All the Wrong Places
We received this, yesterday from a reader, and felt it worth sharing. Seems a tribute to the passing of a political activist, writer, teacher and humanitarian was not worth the time of our local reporters, but a tribute to a favorite prime time TV show proved itself worthy:
I did not hear anything on the news about the free, open to anyone dinner put on by Mary Adams at the Flying Squirrel Community Space last night (the food was excellent btw). Students and other members of the community gathered to share a meal and reflect on the life and work of Howard Zinn. Some of our neighbors had personal connections to Howard and spoke about them. We also watched the documentary, You can’t be neutral on a moving train, which is about Howard’s life. I looked around at the students and wondered how many budding Zinns were in the audience. I left there well fed, well informed and inspired to continue my own social justice activism.
This morning, I heard a story on R news about a group of about 100 young people, some of whom required medical help because they spent a lot of time outside last night wearing shorts, sandals and skimpy tops at a party to celebrate their adoration of the tv program, Jersey Shore. One person was quoted as saying, “It’s not fair, a lot of people are going to get hypothermia from this.”
That made the news.
I expect more from RNews.
What do you all think?

more should know of this great man…
There were medical emergencies and violence requiring an EMS and RPD response brought about the careless indifference or neglect on the part of the owners of Friar Nightclub. Additionally there’s the matter of potential consumer fraud, or at the very least, incredibly poor massive customer service issues. Sounds pretty newsworthy to me.
If it bleeds it leads. I guess its the same for frostbitten young women in short skirts who play out roles on shows that try to re institute long since disproved stereotypes. While there was a disturbance it is till true that news which informs is at a minimum here.
Our local tv news largely sucks. We are making Buffalo TV (held up to ridicule for years) look good
Kent Brockleman is alive in Rochester (on all 3 stations)
I think it’s fair to ask…was there a press release for the Zinn event?
If no, then why would anyone expect the media to attend if they weren’t checking a sidebar post on Indymedia the day before the event?
That’s a very fair question,Monkeyman, and one, to which, I do not have an answer.
