Finally, Morone pleads Guilty

Via the D&C

The future for Robert Morone, the key figure in the Robutrad Corp. scandal, now depends on how much help he can give authorities in the ongoing investigation into trades workers who defrauded county taxpayers.

Morone, 53, the former Monroe County liaison to Robutrad, pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to a single fraud count. Under advisory federal sentencing recommendations, Morone could serve 57 to 71 months.

Prosecutors will recommend a sentence of 30 to 37 months if they are pleased with Morone’s assistance with the investigation.

Morone admitted in his plea agreement that:

  • The scheme defrauded Monroe County out of between $400,001 and $1 million, largely by paying workers for jobs not done or for jobs done that weren’t county-connected.
  • Robutrad workers, while being paid by the county, did jobs for private individuals, ran errands for Morone, and provided help to the county GOP.
  • He had Robutrad workers make contributions to the county GOP, then he reimbursed them with county funds.
  • The question is what else does he know
