Life after the Big Box Grocer’s vegetable section … Winter Farmers market extends season

At some point I’ll finish the CSA post detailing my experience with Community Supported Agriculture, but that is not today.  I will discuss Farmer’s Markets - because one of the benefits of the CSA was trying different types of vegetables without the plastic packaging and the food I was about to put into my body came from Sodus and was picked a few days previous as opposed to ripening en route from California.   Well, the CSA experience has ended, but the trips to the farmers market haven’t.

Western New York may not have the year-round growing season of warmer climes, but farmers here are making progress in extending the season in which they can offer fresh fruits and vegetables to eager locavores.

That’s the word from the Brighton Winter Farmers Market, where regular Julie Miller has been pleased with the scope and variety of vegetables.

Kurt Forman of Clearview Organic Farm in Palmyra is trying to create more growing space in his hoop houses (also called high tunnels), which are covered tube-like structures that protect field crops from wind, rain and frost. He has suspended soil-filled gutters from the rafters of the hoop house interior to grow leafy greens, cilantro and other shallow-rooted vegetables.

Tuesday his table was flush with tatsoi, arugula and four different types of kale.

This year the Market vendors geared up for extended season, planting a little later and more of it. This certainly is helping to extend the season.

So see you there - at least for a couple of more weeks.

Yeah! In addition to the local, in season, yummy and healthy veggies, I have gotten great yogurt, sausage, cheese, pasta, bread and herbs. I’ve gotten a bunch of beautiful beeswax candles for christmas gifts, my favorite herbalist is there with a wide variety of beautiful soaps, shampoos, teas and tinctures. I can’t forget to mention the chocolate, coffee and hot cocoa - and so much more. Do you know if there’s any dates after December?

Oh,and in regards to herbalists, let me just put in a plug for Lavender Moon, at the corner of Quaker Meeting House Rd and Boughton Hill in Honeoye Falls. Angela has all sorts of homegrown organic herbs, plus products which she has created, such as mulled cider herb blends, shampoo, facial washes, etc. Plus, it’s just a delight to walk around the store during the Christmas Season.

Yep, She’s the one. Also, she has a couple of medicinal products that I’ll swear by! (For the pets too!)
