Rep Slaughter opposes the escalation in Afghanistan

I have some differences with Rep Slaughter (health care anyone?) but her statements about Afghanistan aren’t one of them.

Here is the intro of a post she wrote at dkos

President Obama has announced his intention to send 30,000 more American combat personnel into Afghanistan, bringing the total number of U.S. troops there to 100,000 by next summer. During his speech, the President failed to set out concrete goals and a firm exit strategy. I cannot support this escalation without those guarantees. I am extremely concerned that Afghanistan will rapidly become one more military quagmire that sacrifices American lives and drains our funds.

I invite you to read the whole thing.  The question is what will she do about it?  I mean there has to be a supplemental coming up.  Will she vote against that?

When does the next supplemental funding bill come to a vote?  Will it come before or after the troops are in place (remember they all won’t be there until the summer) so we shouldn’t expect to see results of more troops on the ground until the late summer early fall of 2010 (in time for the election cycle.  Funny that).

We know were Rep Massa is on this issue - he was out front early and often with his opposition.

You can read where Rep Maffei and Rep Lee stand below the fold

Rep Maffei questions the timetable and level of commitment.

“In some ways I’m a little confused,” the Democratic Congressman from DeWitt said. “If this is for our national security, why aren’t we making a bigger commitment?” He noted that generals on the ground wanted 10,000 more troops than Obama plans to send.

On the other hand, if our priority is to bring the troops home, then shouldn’t we start leaving “as soon as possible?” Maffei asked.

Rep Lee - wants more troops.
