LGBT Rally Today!
5:30 today, in front of the Bachelor Forum, University and Atlantic, in a show of solidarity following the shameful vote of our NYS Senate. Sponsored by GAGV, Pride Agenda and others. From the NYT:
The bill was defeated by a decisive margin of 38 to 24. The Democrats, who have a bare, one-seat majority, did not have enough votes to pass the bill without some Republican support, but not a single Republican senator voted for the measure. Still, several key Democrats who were considered swing votes also opposed the bill.
The Upstate Senators all voted in favor of discrimination. Let’s rally to throw the bastards out. We need a new senate.
(Thanks for the heads-up, Christine.)

Valesky (from the Syracuse area and a perennial GOP target) voted in favor, even though he had stated in the past that he was not in favor of marriage equality. Credit where credit is due.
On the other hand, Alesi went the other way and voted against, even though he had made favorable noises about the marriage bill in the past. Every single Republican voted nay. They made it a matter of party discipline. Think about that for a minute and what it means for New York.
Thank you HP, I was not aware of Valesky. I was thinking of Robach (that paragon of marital virtue), Alesi, Maziarz, Nozolio. The usual suspects.
My apologies to Senator Valesky and thank you for your vote.
My parents always support and campaign for Senator Valesky. I’ve heard lots of good things about him.
another loss at the hands of those who claimed to supporters - way to go Malcolm Smith, hope your wrist doesn’t hurt from cashing all those campaign donations from LGBT people in this state
Antoine Thompson, (D) Buffalo, voted in favor of the bill.
A libertarian system wouldn’t require the approval of government to formalize a relationship between two consenting adults.
And thank you Mike for Antoine Thompson. Again, I was not aware. Apologies to Senator Thompson.
Anyone remember last cycle when significant resources were pulled from the Dollinger campaign to protect Bill Stachowski out of Buffalo? I recall (from memory) that there was a dramatic slip in the polls for Stachowski and suddenly resources from Rochester went to Buffalo.
Stachowski, of course, was an upstate Democrat who voted against this bill
If I’m not mistaken, Malcolm Smith voted for marriage equality. So why are you still banging on him? The measure lost, how does that help the cause? Now Senators are locked into their positions, thus making it even harder for them to justify a switch. I never understood that strategy. I get putting people on record, but losing is still losing. Why not organize your votes and win? It’s not like people didn’t already essentially know who would and would not support.
