Ruben Diaz - ‘Give credit to Monserrate for helping his girlfriend after slashing her face’

Ruben Diaz issued a statement on the Hiram Monserrate conviction.  My post title was paraphrased.  He actually said:

Senator Monserrate was found guilty of trying to do good by forcing his girlfriend to go to the hospital for treatment.

Through the magic of cut and paste, once again, this time in bold.

Senator Monserrate was found guilty of trying to do good by forcing his girlfriend to go to the hospital for treatment.

OMG.  What does Ruben Diaz think?  We should give Monserrate a medal for his quick thinking?  Violently trying to resolve a situation that doesn’t/shouldn’t require violence and then getting credit for taking the victim to the hosptial?  Exactly how out of touch is Ruben Diaz?  Here is the entire statement which basically says, “look over there, over there, over there”.

Here is his statement via Captial Confidential:

For all those Senators and legislators who are calling to condemn Senator Hiram Monserrate and demand that he is ousted from the Senate, where were you all when Senator John Sabini was convicted of drunk driving? Senator Monserrate did not hide behind a plea. Senator Sabini did. Senator Monserrate was found guilty of trying to do good by forcing his girlfriend to go to the hospital for treatment.

No one called for Senator Sabini to be removed from the Senate. How many of my colleagues have posed in photos with Mothers Against Drunk Driving after embracing with our former Senator John Sabini? Is this because my colleagues practice drunk driving, too, or are my colleagues just more comfortable with drunk drivers?

It is a hypocrisy for my fellow Senators to demand for a more severe punishment of one colleague who has been tried in a court of law and found not guilty, while these same colleagues have ignored the actions of another colleague who took a plea crime that could have resulted in the death of children and families on the road!

Notice how the actual crime isn’t addressed at all, or his ability to represent the people?  It is a nice sleight of hand statement and the question is, will it grow legs?  Don’t think so - People know that Diaz and Monserrate are birds of a feather.  Their fates in the Senate are too closely interwoven.  I mean, what else is Diaz going to say to his only friend in the State Senate?

NEWS FROM STATE SENATOR LIZ KRUEGER
New York State Senate, 26th District
STATEMENT FROM SENATOR LIZ KRUEGER IN RESPONSE TO HIRAM MONSERRATE’S CONVICTION
“I believe Hiram Monserrate should not remain in the Senate, and for the sake of his constituents, the institution of the Senate and the Democratic party he should resign immediately based on the seriousness of his violent crime.

Being an elected official is an honor and a privilege, not a right. As a state legislator , the voters give you the power to decide what laws all 19 million of us live under. And as such we are obligated to hold ourselves to the highest standards of our laws.

The justice system has determined that Mr. Monserrate has violated our laws and is guilty of a very disturbing and violent crime against a woman. Domestic violence is a scourge on our society, and an issue which I believe requires us to speak out. Only through speaking out can we work to prevent more violence, support survivors, end the stigma and fear that victims deal with, and advocate for stronger penalties for those who believe they are above the law and violate another human being.

The Senate is exploring our institutional legal options now that the Courts have ruled, but haven’t yet issued a sentence. For me, the length of the sentence does not matter – domestic violence is domestic violence, guilt is guilt. Therefore, I believe Hiram Monserrate should not remain in the Senate.”
