White House tries to keep informed of health care scare rumors, Fox News accuses them of asking Americans to “narc on your neighbor”

Yesterday on Wingnut Watch, we discussed some of the over-the-top rumors being circulated to frighten people about the health care proposals. The White House is attempting to keep informed about the rumors and asked the public to let them know what  new questions are being raised:

There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end of life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.

Dang, wouldn’t you know it, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and others seized on it as an example of Big Brotherism, accusing the White House of trying to collect email addresses of honest Americans:

The White House weighed in with this clarification:

“We want to be sure people have the facts about health insurance reform that will lower costs, protect consumers from insurance regulations that deny them coverage and assure quality and affordable health care for all Americans,” Abrams said. “We are not compiling lists or sources of information. We may post fact checks from time to time to be sure Americans know the truth about health insurance reform.”

Not that the clarification matters. The wingnuts are off and running with their newest morsel of misinformation… more fodder for the next tea bagger rally.

I complained then and I complain now. My criticism is consistent, value based and directed at both factions of the status quo, the democrats and republicans.

Thanks for thinking of me, you just have to realize my love of freedom has no partisan slant.
