Extending Health Care Coverage. Thanks, Governor Paterson!

You’ve heard me complain about my two adult sons who, up until June 26th of this year, had no health care related to being recent college graduates and having entry level jobs (and, believe me, I am grateful for the work they have) which do not provide health care,  while entry level wages were too low to purchase plans.  On June 26th, here in Rochester at the U of R, Governor Paterson signed, into law, a bill which keeps adult children covered under their parent’s plan until age 29.

“Those people 19 to 29 account for 31 percent of all the uninsured in the state…over 800,000 New Yorkers. They will not have to worry, because after today, they can remain, at no cost to the state, on their parents or guardians’ health care insurance policy,” Paterson said.

The governor says this measure costs taxpayers nothing because it keeps New Yorkers on private plans.

He added that insurance companies may see some increase in costs, but these are costs for services they should be providing in the first place.

Bills were also signed extending COBRA benefits and closing loopholes in HMOs.

And just in case you were thinking that because my problem is solved, for the time being, that I will stop my single-payer rallying cry, let it be known that I will not.  I do not subscribe to the, “I got mine, too bad for you.”, theory.  This is a cause worth fighting for.
