Bruno: Don’t start my Trial

Former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno is seeking indefinite delay of his trial on charges of corruption and influence peddling. His defense team, which has been aggressively trying for dismissal or postponement for months, now has a new angle:

Short of dismissing the indictment, Bruno’s attorneys also have asked U.S. District Judge Gary L. Sharpe to postpone Bruno’s trial, which is scheduled to begin this fall, until the U.S. Supreme Court examines the constitutionality of the honest services statute in two unrelated public corruption cases.

The nation’s highest court recently agreed to examine two cases involving the honest services statute. One case involves a pending indictment against former Alaska state representative Bruce Weyrauch, who is accused of voting on oil tax legislation to favor a company he had made a deal with to hire him for future legal work.

Bruno, age 80, may be trying to run out the clock. If he can delay long enough, who knows?
