Breaking - Albany stalemate ends

As suddenly as it began, and with the same man, it is ended. Pedro Espada is returning to the Democratic caucus, once again giving the Dems 32-30 majority in the N.Y. Senate.

Pedro Espada Jr. returned to the Democrats and was named Senate majority leader on Thursday, ending a monthlong stalemate that has hobbled state government, as part of a deal worked out by Senate Democratic leaders.

Mr. Espada’s return would give the Democrats 32 votes in the Senate, a clear two-vote margin that would re-establish their control of the chamber. Senator Malcolm A. Smith of Queens would be president for an undetermined period of time, and Senator John L. Sampson of Brooklyn would be the leader of the Democratic caucus as part of the deal, the particulars of which were explained by Senator Smith at a news conference.

And Tom Golisano does not appear happy about any of it.

As it became clear that a deal was at hand, Steve Pigeon, a top aide to the Rochester billionaire Tom Golisano, a supporter of the Republican takeover, left Mr. Espada’s office, saying little.

Well, this whole mess has been one huge waste of time… We’re basically going back to the way it was before the June 8th coup attempt.
