Breaking: New York Senate back in session

The New York State Senate just gaveled in for the first time since Governor Paterson called them back for a special session. Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Democrat from Westchester, is presiding and Malcolm Smith is the floor leader. I can’t quite figure out what’s going on: Stewart-Cousins gavels in the Senate, then she recognizes Senator Smith, who then speaks inaudibly for about ten seconds as it sounds like Republicans are yelling at him from across the aisle, then Stewart-Cousins says that the Senate stands at ease, until about five minutes later this starts all over again. This has happened at least four times now… it appears that they are waiting for the governor to send them some bills.

Also, for some wierd reason, former Senator Marty Connor of Manhattan is up on the dias with Stewart-Cousins, occasionally whispering into her ear.
