Dems hold two Assembly seats in the Bronx

Yesterday, special elections were held in two vacant Assembly seats in the Bronx. Assemblyman Ruben Diaz, Jr. was elected in April to the Bronx borough presidency and tapped another member of the Assembly to be his deputy. Both districts are overwhelmingly Democratic, so it wasn’t much of a surprise that they were held by enormous margins.

Newsday.com:

Democrat Vanessa Gibson beat Conservative Joel Rivera and Republican Barbara Bowland in the 77th Assembly District, garnering 74.4 percent of the votes. The seat had been held by Democrat Aurelia Greene since 1982 in the Democrat-controlled Assembly.

In the 85th Assembly District, Democrat Marcos Crespo trounced Republican Leopold Paul, capturing 92.6 percent of the votes. The seat was held by Ruben Diaz Jr. since 1997.

The only surprise that came last night was that the Conservative Party candidate in the 77th beat out the Republican for second place — that’s definitely notable. The Democratic caucus now has 109 of 150 seats in the New York State Assembly.
