City reviews Maggie’s “State of the County” address
Jeremy Moule was there and had some good observations to go with his review. I also listened to the start of the speech on my way to a meeting.
She started out reviewing the origins of the University of Rochester,(I never knew that the founder was a Baptist minister.) But, I think what everybody here is most interested in, is Ren Square and where is it going? (I have some suggestions, but don’t want to appear shrill) From City (much indirect talk about Duffy, the Ren Square Slayer):
But what everyone was waiting to hear was what the county executive would say about the troubled Renaissance Square project. The bus station-theater-MCC campus planned for Main and Clinton hogged headlines this week when Rochester Mayor Bob Duffy called for a scaled-down version of the plan.
Duffy’s absence from the State of the County and the tense relationship developing between the mayor and the county executive, loomed over the event. Before the speech started, the question of whether Duffy would show was on quite a few lips.
Brooks didn’t mention Duffy by name, but made many thinly-veiled references to the mayor and the mayor’s recent statements.
“We all care about Rochester and Monroe County,” she said. (Media have quoted Duffy as saying that he’s the only one involved in the project who truly cares about the city.)
Brooks said that she stands “firm in support” of the project. She said it will bring money, people, and jobs to the Center City.
“It’s not about me and it’s not a competition between elected leaders,” she said, and urged everyone involved to put the future of the community “above the politics of the past.”
In regards to Medicaid fraud, there was this:
- The county is identifying and investigating questionable Medicaid activity, including using software to cross-check historically affluent ZIP codes with welfare recipients.
“Those who steal from our taxpayers will be held fully accountable,” Brooks said.
I thought that remark was interesting in view of questionable Rob-u-trad activity. Yes, Ms Brooks, the guilty should be held accountable.

The state of the county is bad. I heard Stepahie Aldersley on the radio pointing out the job losses in Monroe county. In addition unemployment is quite high.
Like some of our town leaders, Maggie wants to tell us that everything is fine. It’s too late for that fairytale
Doug Dobson just resigned to spend more time with his business. Any chance this is connected to ROBUTRAD or just the usual Republican game plan of giving the candidate a head start as an incumbent.
I don’t have the answer to that question, but that’s the one district without a Democratic candidate, so if you know anyone who lives in the district who would be good, please let the Greece Democratic Committee know.
I don’t know if he lives in the district but how about Dave Garretson
Who? Thanks for thinking of me. If I lived in the district, who knows… but I’m located in LD 6.
When is the regularly scheduled election in LD-7? Who makes the appointment?
DOH. Rick Antelli, current 4th Ward Councilman in Greece is running for the 7th LD. Dobson is term limited. He was done and couldn’t run in November. They will appoint Antelli to fill his seat now, giving him an “edge” on being an incumbent, and then put their crony in the 4th Ward seat, just like they did with Barry in the 1st, again - thinking this gives them an incumbent advantage.
It’s just a game of musical chairs going on throughout the GOP seats in the County - in the Legislature and in the towns to try to fool the voters into thinking they are the incumbent.
Unfortunately for them, the voters are watching and a little bit smarter than that - especially in Greece where all hell breaks loose daily on the criminal front. Last thing I would want to be is an “incumbent” in Greece! But what do you expect when your GOP Chairman Reilich hails from the land of crookedness?
Rick is pretty much a do-nothing, Just another Auberger rubber stamp. THE democrats could easily field a candidate who can run just on that platform.
They might even resurrect an old campaign chestnut “A choice not an echo” The irony is dripping here.
This line in the speech should give pause
“Tonight I challenge even our harshest critics to get on board or get out of the way. ”
I’m surprised it didn’t get any mention.
