Opening the Week
So, what’s going on this week? Any predictions?
There is the Swine Flu outbreak.
We have a “Public Health Emergency” which is more a legal designation that means we can move materials from Federal stockpiles to potential hot spots. There are these stories in the Independent, NYT, worth reading. This blog also looks interesting. The CDC has a general page with links - this link - has very current updates (11:45pm Sunday night as of this writing).
Congressman Massa is calling for closing the border with Mexico until the virus is contained. Closing the border - save for a moment the debate if this is an overreaction or precaution. What exactly does closing the border mean? I’m thinking that means grounding flights into the U.S. from Mexico or originating in Mexico, stopping truck traffic, ships, cars, and all the rest. This would be a massive effort. Huge economic impact (we make stuff in Mexico and ship it here). Remember there are already cases here.
Meanwhile, let’s not forget the GOP filibuster of the Department of Health and Human Services nominee. Great timing isn’t it. The states that were taking about succession (teabagger Gov Rick Perry of Texas) suddenly needs federal help as he asks/welcomes Federal resources.
Around town - expect more news about the
Maggie Brooks and Campaign contributions
Of course, we are still waiting for the other shoes to drop and there is RenSquare.
Anything else?
