Wednesday Wingnut Watch

Teabaggers, this is YOUR DAY to do it in public. From coast to coast, April 15th is THE day of tea parties. All kinds of people are getting together, just like 236 years ago in Boston harbor, to protest the King’s unfair tax on tea. No, it’s not about tea. I don’t think it’s exactly about taxes either, because under the Obama Stimulus package, most of us are getting a tax DECREASE. So it’s about, um, uh… well, this is where I get a little confused. Here’s an explanation, if you can follow it.

Our first Tea Party was a “Stimulus Protest.” The Tax Day Tea Party is a protest of wasteful government spending, confiscatory taxation, the selling of our posterity into the bondage of debt, the devaluation of our currency, and bailouts of private enterprise.

The tea parties are as varied as the hodgepodge of (mostly) conservative attendees. It’s about the stimulus package. It’s about Obama. It’s about Congress. It’s about the bailouts. It’s about taxes. It’s about… well, it’s about everything that frustrates us and we just need to show our frustration by protesting. In other words, to quote from old movies… “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more!” or Question: “What are you rebelling against?” Answer: “What have you got?”
For a lighter look at the whole thing, here’s Rachel Maddow discussing the Teabaggers:

Gee, do you get the feeling there’s an inside joke there, and you’re not exactly getting it? Does “teabagging” have a double meaning, you wonder. The Bee is too bashful to discuss it here, but I can direct you to an answer to your teabagging question.

The “We are a Christian Nation bunch” was fully revved up last week. Well, it was Easter week. Also, there was that thing President Obama said in Turkey:

And I’ve said before that one of the great strengths of the United States is — although as I mentioned, we have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation; we consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.

The ”Christian Nation” columnists and bloggers were out in  strength too. Like this guy. And this guy. And this guy. And this guy. And this guy. Oh, and a local kick in the wingnuts to this guy.

If you see any crazy rightie wingnuttery, let me know so I can share it with RT readers: sbr (at) rochesterturning.com

(Update from ladkiddo.  I have taken the liberty of adding this additional “teabagging” video from Think Progress because it was just too good to pass up.  I only hope the Bee approves:

Gosh, that Schuster piece is hilarious - if you’re either still in Jr. High or a big Howard Stern fan. Surely he could have squeezed in one more sexual reference. I can’t imagine why a comedy genius like that was replaced by Ed Schultz.

    Wow, I just left.

There were about 400 tea baggers and lots and lots of flags. First, we sang “God Bless America”, then we sang “My country ’tis of Thee” and then there was a bagpipe and flag parade. (Yes, there’s nothing like a bagpipe, the traditional instrument of socialist European descent to stir the American soul!)

More flags and lots and lots of saluting.

    More singing.

You know these people love their country, you can tell by all the flags and saluting and singing.

Yup, they love their country and don’t want to see it turned over it that socialist Obama.

Being a white guy I was able to easily fit in. In fairness and as a nod to political correctness they let the black guy who showed up speak. The black guy turned out to be a minister. He reminded us the Bible tells us that Jesus loves America too. He talked about how Ronald Reagan saved the economy, fought the abortionists and prevented homosexuals from overrunning the country.

OK, that’s not exactly accurate; he used right wing code speech. Y’know “traditional families” (wink, wink) stuff.

There were also signs that said Obama was a Marxist. So I asked a couple of people next to me, “So is do you think Obama is a more of a socialist or a Marxist?”

Gee whiz, neither of them knew the difference. They didn’t know philosophical or practical differences, but they knew he was one of…”them”

And then there were the guys who were letting the crowd know that the income tax was unconstitutional.

Yikes! Wait’ll the lawyers find out. Can you imagine? The income tax has been illegal since 1913 with the passage of the 16th Amendment but nobody has thought to file a lawsuit!

Then there was scary part, the bulges on the hip crowd that were ready to lead the revolution against the government to get back the country they love. As their signs said, “It’s 1776 all over again!”

Lots of yellow “Don’t tread on me” flags outdone in number only by the yellow “don’t tread on me” t-shirts.

“No Taxation without Representation” throw tea in the river; it’s time to revolution against the country I love!

    You betcha!

Why was that the scary part? Are only the 20-30’s beautiful people “in” crowd supposed to demonstrate, and only then if they agree with your political leanings? The AARP is probably the most powerful lobby in Washington DC and they certainly all would fall into this demographic, would they not?

I’ve been to a lot of protests and rallies. Both left and right, and I’ve never been to a “left” rally in this area where handguns were bulging from under people’s jackets or calling for a armed revolt against the government. That’s mucked up…

Oooh, I stand corrected. I thought this thread was a continuation of the mocking of those in attendance that occurred following the first tea party in Rochester when the Governor was in town.

Sort of like the need for name calling I guess, makes your arguments so much more authoritative.

What is wrong with “bulges at the hip”? It is a right protected by the 2nd Amendment.

As far as the tea parties and taxation goes, inflation and dollar devaluation are both hidden taxes caused by the stimulus package and the bailouts. We will be subjected to a great deal of both in the near future.

There’s nothing “wrong” with it, but it would make me very nervous if I was in a crowd like that. Just because they have the right to bear arms, doesn’t mean that everyone who does is mentally capable or that they even know how to handle a firearm. All it would take is one Plaxico Burress in the crowd and things could end up very badly.

In regards to the tea demonstrations, I actually don’t have a problem with them, nor do I think they are “nuts”. I don’t agree with them, but it’s a harmless form of protest and a bit clever and I’ve certainly seen “kookier” things at some left wing protests that I’ve attended. As long as they stay peaceful, have at it.

Then maybe the 2nd Amendment needs some amending. You act like it’s handed down from “God” or something.
And how legal is it carrying a concealed weapon?
The DHS is warning the president of the growing threat of the Right-wing extremists.
And who started the f***ing stimulus package and bailouts? Why weren’t the wingnuts protesting then? Thanks for the legacy Dubya! This president is giving the biggest tax break in history to 95% of the population and these poor, misinformed people are protesting?
      Sick!

      LIMITS ON CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMITS
May police limit carrying concealed handguns? Yes

State law allows police chiefs and state sheriffs to prohibit people from carrying concealed weapons (CCW) in public. Police chiefs and state sheriffs ?may issue” permits that allow people to carry concealed weapons in public if police believe it is in the interest of public safety. No training is required in the legal or safe use of weapons to obtain the CCW permit.

I know this is difficult for you, however, there’s a difference between what is legal and the frightening concept that people show up armed at a rally with signs promoting armed revolt.

The idea that some people who showed up for this rally believe they have the right to engage in armed rebellion is crossing the line into the extremist zone.

Armed rebellion is unlawful and unconstitutional.

We’ve settled that question twice before…once peacefully, once not so peacefully.

You may not agree with what the man has to do to clean up the Bush mess, but even suggesting that armed rebellion is an appropriate response is beyond reasonable debate.

The stimulus, the bailouts, social programs and many other government expenditures are unconstitutional, that never stopped the government. One of the primary reasons for the 2nd Amendment is to protect ourselves from government gone wild . . .precisely what we have now.

I agree that it is not Obama’s mess, it is also not Bush’s mess. It is a mess that has been in the works for approximately 100 years. I can and will blame Obama, and Bush, for making it worse.

What is really unconstitutional is usurpation of authority by the executive. This was carried out by Bush and his lawyers. Unfortunately Obama is not reversing all of these offenses.

There really isn’t a strong argument for taxes being unconstitutional. years of Reganomics has rotted the collective brains of segments of the pubic.

Thanks for diverting us from the real threats to the economy. Obama’s policies are actually too weak but he got one thing right: He says that the politics of fear is creating support for polices that will further impoverish working folks.
