Chinese courts to accept Melamine compensation cases

Remember this issue? We wrote about it last year. Now the piper must be paid and maybe some of the families who suffered because they trusted their government to protect their food will get some form of monetary compensation. It’s all so sad and all so avoidable. No amount of money is ever going to bring their children back.

A district court in the northern city of Shijiazhuang said it would hear the suit filed against the Sanlu Group, the dairy firm at the centre of the poisoned milk controversy, Xinhua news agency said.

The lawsuit was filed by an unnamed parent of a child who was sickened by the milk, it said.

At least six infants died and nearly 300,000 were made sick last year by milk powder contaminated by the industrial chemical melamine, which was added to milk supplies to give the appearance of a higher protein content.

In January of this year, 2 of the perpetrators were sentenced to death for their parts in this gruesome crime.

A COURT has sentenced two men to death for their role in a tainted milk scandal but gave the former chairwoman of China’s largest dairy a lesser sentence of life imprisonment, enraging parents of infants who died.

The death sentences did not assuage some parents.

“Even if these people were dismembered and cut into a thousand pieces, it would not compensate for the hurt we have suffered,” Wang Yuelan, a mother of an infant who died earlier this month, said in a telephone interview from her native Shandong province on China’s eastern seaboard.

Another parent, Xu Hao, said he was coerced to sign a government-backed agreement that gave him a one-time cash payment of 2000 yuan (about $294) for his ailing infant daughter, Kaining, who drank Sanlu milk for 10 months and still suffers from kidney stones

Money over safety. Profits over people. The formula companies have been guilty of it for years. How many children have died from complications related to consuming artificial infant milk?  Maybe US companies can learn from the mistakes of their foreign counterparts.

Maybe not.

Wonder how US courts are coming with that peanut manufacturer? Regulation needs to be a component as well as courts IMHO.
