Signs of the Pittsford Village Elections
Happened to be driving through Pittsford the other day, and took some quick pics of the fine crop of election lawn signs. The elections are today, and they’re for the village board.
Stacy Freed is on the Dem & Villager Party lines. She ran back in 2007, along with Dem winner Mary-Beth Cleary (long-time readers will remember we broke the news of Cleary’s win). Maybe without a Dem ticket-splitter like Ron Johnson running, Freed will have a chance of making it. Her signs seem like they’re all over, and were up first. It’s a very short sign-season in Pittsford– it seemed like they were up only just a week ago.

There are two slots open (Cleary’s isn’t one of them, apparently), and the GOP has two of their folks on the line, one for re-election. I’m curious why Trip Pearson doesn’t get professionally printed signs, but Paula Sherwood does. (Maybe the percs of incumbancy?)

There’s a number of “homemade” Sherwood signs up, looking like they’ve been done by a “chalkboard menu” artist. Many are cookie-cutter, with the same info on each, but some are have customized messages on them. I hate to admit it, but done this way, the home-made signs have a certain appeal.

Recent Pittsford village elections have been notoriously close– in 2005 Dems lost one board seat by a single vote, another by 6 votes. In 2007, they would’ve won 2 seats if there hadn’t been an additional Dem running as an independent.
Just another reason to get out there and vote. And, long-term, if you want to see more diversity on town boards (rather than just GOP), you need to start candidates somewhere.
I’ve been deep into job hunting, so I haven’t been paying close attention– anyone know what the Pittsford issues are this election?

Unfortunately, it was a GOP sweep in Pittsford. I don’t know what issues were in play, but it is another example of the need to have candidates for both slots in a two seat race. I fear that some of the people that voted for the Dem candidate, Stacy Freed, then “used” their second vote to vote for one of the two GOP candidates. On the other hand, most GOP voters probably voted for the two GOP candidates. Town and village leaders…its not enough to run a single candidate…if there are two seats open, run two candidates, even if one is less active, otherwise the chances of winning are greatly diminished.
One of the open seats was Mary Beth Cleary’s seat (the lone Dem). I heard she decided not to run again.
