Protest is good for your health - Massa leads Health Care rally
Today, in Washington DC, a protest was led by Congressman Eric Massa outside 2009 national conference of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Via Huffpo
Sign-waving protesters cheered as Massa delivered his full-throated support of single-payer health insurance. The protest, which attracted roughly 60 people, was organized chiefly by reform advocates Health Care for America Now, along with partners from the AFL-CIO, MoveOn.org and several other groups. Organizers decried AHIP as a special interest group that makes obscene profits to defend the status quo.
Thanks to American News Project, You can watch a bit of it here:
Holy crap, can you believe our feisty little Congressman ? (I feel just like a mom watching her kid score a goal at a soccer match-that’s my guy, that’s my congressman!!) I say, give em Hell, Eric. That’s why we elected you. You’re fighting the same fight we are and you have our collective voices behind you. Single Payer. I have 2 adult children who have no health care coverage. It’s scary out there.
And then you have these talking heads inside the conference who have no defense of why their form of health care insurance should continue. They’re scared too, but for a totally different reason. Their income, their lifestyle is being threatened.
See, this was about status quo. And how is status quo working for us? Remember this - Rochester health insurer bilks customers out of millions ? Sure, there is finally a seat at the table for single payer, but until we realize that health care is a right, each of us is one illness away from disaster .
Our very lives are being threatened from lack of adequate health care. Single payer- that’s what the people want and deserve and it is what will put our economy back to rights.
Their next conference should be at Denny’s.

I take it I missed the criticism last week of UAW Conference in Miami Beach, Florida that VP Biden spoke at, held at Fontainebleau Hilton Resort. It was probably out of convenience and short commuter distances for the attendees, with so many unionized auto mfg. plants in Florida. Perhaps all the hotels and conference centers in the Midwest and Northeast were booked, being March and all.
Are you talking about the Executive Conference of the AFL-CIO meeting at the Fontainebleau? Apparently
Go, Eric, go. Hey, don’t you grab him for yourself, he’s my congressman too!
It’s good to hear this from Eric. I remember when he was first running for Congress and I told him my story–single mom with no health insurance. He was lukewarm about the issue in the beginning, so it has been nice to see Eric embrace single payer so boldly.
