Why Is the GOP opposed to Tax cuts??

As Obama is about to sign the stimulus package, a stimulus package that includes spending and targeted tax cuts remember this…

the GOP opposes tax cuts.  Why?

Well, last week Chris Lee missed a vote on the Stimulus.  He was in his district dealing with the Flight 3407, which crashed near his house.  So he missed a vote.  So what?  A vote he most likely would have cast as, “no”, like every other GOP House member.

Well - Do you know that the this stimulus bill contains a lot, I mean a lot, of tax cuts?

Check this out (via Washington Monthly)

BIGGEST. TAX CUT. EVER…. A few weeks ago, when the House approved the economic stimulus bill without any Republican votes, David Weigel noted that he literally couldn’t remember “a time when the entire Republican conference in either house voted against tax cuts.”

That’s true, but let’s go a little further. The compromise plan announced last night includes $282 billion in tax cuts over two years. With that in mind, Steven Waldman argues, persuasively, that when the vast majority of congressional Republicans oppose the package, they’ll be voting against the biggest tax cut “in history.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, Bush’s first two years of tax cuts amounted to $174 billion. A second batch in 2004 and 2005 cost $231. And those were thought to be bigger than the tax cuts offered by Reagan, Kennedy or others.

Now, perhaps some new analysis will show that the tax cuts end up not quite being the largest in history by this measure or that. But it’s clear they’re massive.

[snip]

As such, GOP lawmakers are going to reject one of the largest, if not the largest, tax cut ever proposed by a president — which just so happens to be targeted at the working and middle class families Obama vowed to look out for.

OK everyone.  The GOP hates tax cuts.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Yo, Democrats - drive this stake through the GOP mantra.

I happen to agree with the fellow who wrote in the D&C Letters yesterday (2/16/09) that if the Republicans don’t agree with the Simulus Package then they should NOT accept the money or jobs in their districts! It’s simple. If they voted “Nay” then don’t take the Pay!

Have the courage to stand by your convictions, Republicans, and then explain it all to the voters in your districts. Yeah right…that will happen, I say with sarcasm dripping off my tongue…

For the record, Lee’s office issued a statement saying that, had events not forced Lee to miss the final vote, he would have voted against the Stimulus Bill (again). By the way, there’s a new place to keep track of what Lee (and others) are trying to pull: glowdemocrats.com. The Democrats of the 4 rural GLOW counties are working together now on a lot of things, and one of them is this new blog.
