NY State Senate Majority Leader Visits Rochester

Per the D&C:

Promising that upstate has a partner in the Senate, the new majority leader stopped in Rochester today and introduced his vice president pro-tem: David Valesky from Syracuse.

“Cuts and sacrifices will be shared across the state,” Majority Leader Malcolm A. Smith, D-Queens, said after he and Valesky met with Mayor Robert Duffy for nearly an hour.

The group discussed the city’s challenges with job loss, violence and low graduation rates. Smith said economic development upstate is a priority of the new Democratic majority to diversify the state’s economy.

That was a smart move having Valesky be VP of the Senate.  From what I’ve read on NYCO’s blog and elsewhere, he’s a popular Dem in a tough senate district.  Hopefully the fact that he’s an upstater will help inject an upstate voice in the Senate leadership.
