Let’s keep “Speaking Out”!
The only page of the D&C that I read with any regularity at all is the “Speaking Out” page. Take that away and my inclination to even look at the newspaper drops significantly. From a PIA email that I received today, I give you this opportunity to do something about it:
As you may know, the Democrat and Chronicle has reduced its editorial section by half, cutting the “Speaking Out” page during the week.
In response, Rochester for Obama has organized an online petition for those who wish to see “Speaking Out” brought back every day of the week.
Barack Obama has inspired countless Americans to reclaim their democracy by taking an active role in civic life. He has reminded us that change does not come from Washington, Albany, or City Hall - it comes TO them. An informed public’s voice is at the heart of representative government, and it is the starting point for the change we seek. In Rochester, the Democrat and Chronicle’s “Speaking Out” page has been a vital tool for amplifying that public voice. Over the years, it has played host to thoughtful, intelligent discussion of issues and ideas shaping our area. Now, due to the severity of the economic crisis, the D&C has felt compelled to eliminate Speaking Out during the week. While the need for financial discipline is readily apparent, so too is the need for a community forum in our community newspaper. The Speaking Out page should be a final budget cut, not a first one. At a moment when Americans are seeking to raise their democratic voices, the elimination of Speaking Out has pulled the plug on the microphone. These days are too challenging to cut short our public discussion of the enormous problems we face. Now is not a time for less democracy; it is a time for more. Now is not a time for silence; it is the time to speak out for Speaking Out. Please join in signing our petition to urge the D&C to bring back Speaking Out on every day of the week.
