Massa: Straight Talk Instead of Smarmy Smoothness
As I dropped off my daughter at pre-school this morning, I caught a news item on WXXI (not yet on line, so I’ll paraphrase) about Congressman Eric Massa’s drive down to his swearing-in using one of GM’s fuel cell cars. WXXI anchor Rachel Ward* was saying that some are asking if Massa’s drive was just a publicity stunt.
I groaned out loud. I mean, can’t people wait for the guy to be in office for a single day before casting doubt on his every motive? But I needn’t have worried. The excellently-voiced* Rachel Ward said “We asked Massa what he thought of allegations that it was just a publicity stunt.”
Uh-oh, I thought. How is he gonna get out of this one? He answered:
“It absoultely is a publicity stunt.”
YES! He went on to explain that it was meant to draw attention to the fact that American car manufacturers are capable of innovation and forward-looking technologies, and that Upstate NY is capable of producing some of those technologies.
When I think back on the smooth, but content-free media clips of Randy Kuhl, I have to say this is quite a refreshing and welcome change. Some may have preferred the smoother but less-knowledgable candidate that Kuhl was, but I’ll take my representation with a double shot of expresso, please.
* In the interest of full disclosure, I have a massive crush on Rachel Ward’s voice.
