Obama and Warren revisited
On Christmas Eve I wrote about Rick Warren’s choice for speaker at the Inauguration of our new president from the point of view of Melissa Etheridge. Although I received only one comment, I saw many emails which were in opposition to that position. I would like to present Etheridge’s response and as soon as I can find a link, I will put it up, but here is a snippet:
I completely understand and even somewhat share others’ disappointment
and consternation over Warren’s oft noted views against gay marriage,
and I myself am a pro-gay-marriage activist. I shudder to think I find
myself in the position of defending Warren, so all I will say on that
note is that I see a man who has contradicted himself on the topic,
but who is clearly engaged and making a far greater effort at dialogue
and understanding than a single other evangelical counterpart I can
think of. This is not “good enough” for me, but I think it is a clue
to Obama’s probable reasoning for including Warren. My worry is that anger is blinding many on the left from seeing the
larger picture. Obama is doing exactly what he said he would: bringing
everyone to the table. I’ve read many arguments about how that still
doesn’t justify this controversial decision, but I still believe he is
trying to do something very bold in the interest of healing, or at
least civility.
As this president, who we worked so passionately to elect, eases his way into the executive position, he continues to be inspired by one of the greatest presidents in history, Abraham Lincoln, who said (and I quote)
“The best way to destroy an enemy is to make him a friend.”

Rev. Joesph Lowery is giving the benediction. Yes, he supports Gay Rights. He also firmly believes marriage should be between men and women only.
