Kennedy for US Senate
Caroline Kennedy has joined the large group of Democrats looking to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate. She is the daughter of the late President and Jacqueline Kennedy.
From the NY Times:
Caroline Kennedy, a daughter of America’s most storied political family who for many years fiercely guarded her privacy, is considering whether to pursue the Senate seat expected to be vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton early next year, a family member said Friday.
“I believe that she is considering it,” said her cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has spoken to Ms. Kennedy about the matter during the past week. “A lot of people the last couple of weeks have urged her to do it.”
Ms. Kennedy called Gov. David A. Paterson on Wednesday to discuss the position, Mr. Paterson confirmed Friday. The governor will choose a replacement for Mrs. Clinton upon her expected confirmation as secretary of state next month.
Call me old hat, but I think we could always use another Kennedy in Congress.

OK, you’re an old hat.
Can you articulate her qualifications for being a senator?
Does being ther daughter and neice of well known liberals qualify her?
Why does being a Kennedy qualify her? Does being wealthy and having the ability to rub elbows with the priveleged, and enough excess money to be a philanthropist somehow make her a good choice to represent New York’s interests in national affairs?
To date it seems her greatest achievement has been to use her name as a fundraising device.

Perhaps she’ll be in competition with Chelsea Clinton to see which royal house keeps the seat?
Let’s hope the governor chooses a replacement based on ability and not social class.
Based upon the Governor’s comments regarding the nominees for the Court of Appeals, the selection criteria are likely to include the usual politically correct, identity group considerations from which Democrats rarely waiver.
Its too bad RFK Jr. won’t contend…he would be friggin’ awesome. Caroline can run for the position in 2010 if she wants but I think Paterson should appoint an upstater like Louise, Kirsten Gilibrand or Brian Higgins.
Well, I think it would make great sense to suggest Caroline as a stopgap appointment until NYS voters can get to elect the next senator in 2010 without having a Paterson-selected incumbent to bias the process. Why should Paterson decide for us? This would be extremely fair to all of the people whose names are being thrown around as prospects!
Yeah, stability. Love that about the Democrats. God help us if he had chosen a NYS version of Sarah Palin. We know how successful picking the “wild card” worked, don’t we John?
Slaughter consistently says she doesn’t want it.
And that makes sense.
She would give up one of the most powerful committee chairs in the house and then take the chance that she would win the election for the senate seat when it expires.
She is loved here, but in the north country, central NY and downstate that doesn’t mean a lot.
At her age that could be very difficult. She said as much herself just this week on WXXI.
