D&C LTE Pushback On Petrena’s “Soft Hate”
This letter writer took issue with Petrena Hayes’ immigrant bashing:
Fear exploited to bash immigrants
Editorial Board blogger Petrena Hayes writes that while perpetrators of sport-killing an undocumented immigrant on Long Island deserve “life in prison with no parole,” the media should report more on the crimes undocumented immigrants commit (Dec. 1 blog excerpt). She laments that immigration issues could be magically prevented if only “people took the correct route to gain legal status. …”
Contrary to immigrant-bashing myths, fear-based stereotypes are mostly hyperbole. Undocumented immigrants come to this country to work; they don’t want to be deported so they avoid police spot lights by not committing crime.
There are no “correct routes.” U.S. immigration quotas are designed to keep out the poor. Fathers of hungry children won’t gamble on an immigrant lottery where a tiny percentage of applicants gets accepted 10 years later. Immigrants have family values, too, and protect their families at all costs.
Many of the South and Central American undocumented are farmers bankrupted by NAFTA and cheap U.S. government-subsidized produce. We need their skills, energy and expertise. Immigration continues to be a net plus for this country founded by immigrants.
I think the D&C likes her generating controversy. I believe the term Rottenchester has used is “more eyeballs on ads”. Teach Report the controversy!

She and the editorial endorsements were the two major reasons why I didn’t renew my subscription to the D&C: it was her sanctimonious unfounded “rantings,” and it was the utter sophomoric quality of writing endorsements, e.g., the one for Kuhl. Cynically I suppose I should be grateful that the page did not make a convincing case for Kuhl, but … I couldn’t find it in myself to renew to pay for such bad writing. C’est la vie!
