Flip Watch: Which upstate New York Senate Republican will Flip?

OK - Can you hear it now?

Question: Who wants to be in the Minority?

Any upstate GOP senator: Not me, not me

Seriously.

Read the D&C editorial board today

With the shift from 32-30 Republican to 32-30 Democrat, Rochester becomes the only major metropolitan area in the state without a majority member in the Senate. The region’s senators, Joe Robach, Jim Alesi, George Maziarz and Mike Nozzolio, will no longer have the clout they once enjoyed.

I’ll save the commentary on the D&C editorial prowess for another time but..Seriously - which of these folks is going to flip?

I mean with all this talk of the gang of four we could have our own gang of four upstate.

What do you think?

robach may flip but still be treated as a minority member. alesi will retire midterm. nozzolio can’t flip in his district because he wouldn’t get reelected. there is no need for maziarz to flip to protect our area when most of his district is west of here.

All four are conservatives and if they were to flip they would have to change who they are and how they vote or else they are really of no use to us. Being a Democrat in name, but not in deed only serves to keep them in the majority and to keep their clout.

Robach has already flipped once to be in the majority, how can anyone trust him if he does again?

PS. I don’t think anyone will flip a darn thing until they figure out what the four downstate Senators are doing. The four of them are making a power play, pure and simple, and the results may determine what anyone else does.

By the way, the four of them said that there are no latinos in any major state or city elected offices. Obviously they only mean New York city when they say that. Perhaps someone should tell them about Gladys Santiago as the President of the Rochester City Council. I don’t disagree that our elected offices need to be more representative of the people they serve and that we need more latinos in office. i am just tired of Rochester getting overlooked for the big city and that’s what these four are proving they want to have happen again.

Robach certainly has the most practice - he’s flipped before, he pretends to be something he’s not all the time, and he even tried to pretend he was already a Democrat while campaigning.

If someone does try to flip, can we say no thanks?

you can’t stop someone from changing their affiliation, but they don’t have to give a member the full perks of the office if they don’t want. so one of them could be a majority member with a small staff and very little member item money.

i think the senate is going to resemble the old corrupt roman senate with bought allegiances. this does however give a great opportunity to ‘bribe’ all senators with equal rights to pay
