Reality Check On Raising Taxes
Finally, I’m starting to hear some sensible discussion of taxes, instead of the brainless bogeyman approach that Republicans have been using forever. First VP candidate Joe Biden pointed out that it’s patriotic (especially for the rich) to pay taxes. It just makes sense that if we’ve benefitted from the taxes our parents and grandparents paid, we should continue to pay that forward as an investment in our country. Sure, we need to ensure that our taxes are spent wisely and not squandered on a poorly managed war in Iraq, or in giveaways to wealthy CEOs, but when we all chip in, we can do a lot more than if it’s every man for himself.
Then Rottenchester over at Fighting 29th points past Randy Kuhl’s tired “Eric Massa Will Raise Your Taxes!!!” rhetoric to the red, white, and blue elephant in the room:
Kuhl’s counting on that old warhorse — “He’ll raise your taxes” — to carry him through one more battle. I’m skeptical. We’re funding an endless war, rescuing banks, and we’ve just nationalized an insurance company. Isn’t it obvious that taxes will go up?
Democrats are saying that the top 5% will bear the burden of the increase. I think that’s salable in this environment. Kuhl’s implied claim that he won’t raise taxes just flies in the face of economic reality.
Reason: 1, Rhetoric: 0.
And we haven’t even touched on the fact that Universal Health Care is just around the corner. Fortunately, people realize that, done well, the increased taxes needed for that will be less than the exorbitant and inefficient amounts they’re paying now. Probably why taxpayers are willing to pay more taxes to get that care.
