Oh, good, let’s spend more money!
So MCC board has hired a consultant to the tune of $65,000 dollars to search for a college president. Now, call me crazy, but aren’t we in a budget crisis and what are we doing spending this kind of money and what is the board being paid for, if not to find their own president and why didn’t they go with one of the qualified candidates from the original search?
Larry Tyree is serving as interim president.
At Monday’s meeting, Tyree told the board that his staff is preparing for possible state budget cuts as a result of a downturn in the economy and an anticipated $1.2 billion state budget deficit. Gov. David Paterson has called for a special session of the state Legislature on Nov. 18.
“This, of course, could possibly result in a significant reduction in the state aid to MCC,” Tyree told the board.
The Legislature could cut aid per full-time equivalent student. Currently, the state provides $2,675 per full-time equivalent student.
At MCC, a $100 cut in that aid would mean a $1.5 million funding cut.
“Who knows what the hit will be?” Tyree told the board.
He said his staff is in the process of working out the various scenarios to eliminate all non-essential expenditures.
Isn’t this non-essential?

Actually, “we” aren’t spending the money — MCC is. There is a common misconception that MCC is funded by the county, which couldn’t be more wrong. MCC gets less than 20% (maybe less than 10%) of its funding from governmental resources and the rest comes from annual giving and tuition. MCC is the only county agency that I know of that consistently runs in the black — which is why the Repugnicans want the presidency to be a political appointment.
Thanks for the clarification Pat!
Actually, by charter the county is suppose to fund a third of the cost of MCC, (1/3 county, 1/3 state, 1/3 tuition) but has consistently failed to fulfill its obligation. The misconception may stem from things like last years MCC charge back tax as part of the failed FAIR plan where the county takes money that is suppose to fund MCC and then uses it for whatever it wants. When it comes to defining “we”, whither county taxpayers, state taxpayers, or local residents that go to MCC, make no mistake, “we” are paying for all of this.
As to county dominion that makes money, look no further than the MCWA for bucket loads of operating in the black.
Thanks 3+. Very helpful. But, regardless of who is footing the bill, we are in dire straits and should be saving public money whenever we can.
Are you saying that because we are in dire straits we should cut wasteful government spending regardless of its source? That might be fine for liberals, but people around here know that public money is for investing in Republican cronies.
