Social (Security) distortion
I’ll be writing a lot about Social Security this weekend and the role it plays in NY-29. In 2006, Kuhl won the race in large part because of a flurry of deceitful and, in some cases, offensive ads that sought to portray Massa as an opponent of Social Security.
What was remarkable about all of this is that Kuhl was an early supporter of privatization of Social Security.
It is my opinion that Republicans would still privatize Social Security if they had the political power to do so. I also believe that, while I strongly disagree with the privatization of Social Security, there do exist some reasonable (though flawed) arguments in favor of such a move.
But you will never hear those arguments. If and when Republicans do seek to privatize Social Security again — and I expect it to happen again in our lifetimes — it will be based on faulty arguments about the system going bankrupt (it’s not).
We’ll have a lot more about this issue, this weekend. But let’s say this simply: Massa — and most other Democrats — are committed to preserving Social Security, Kuhl — and many other Republicans — are committed to privatizing it.
