Your tax dollars at work - Midtown Athletic club expands

Don’t get too excited, these tax dollars are working to create 25 jobs over 3 years for a private health club. See, this health club just gets to pay less taxes because of COMIDA. That’s alright -you get to eventually pay more.

From the D&C

Midtown Athletic Club’s $6.6 million expansion, across roughly five acres adjacent to the Rochester health club on Gould Street, is scheduled to be complete by Memorial Day 2009.

Although construction has already begun, the health club held a ceremonial ground breaking today with representatives of City Hall and Monroe County.

“When this is all done, this will be a city of Rochester country club, so to speak,” Mayor Robert Duffy said. “It’s a great addition.”

The project, which is to add 25 jobs, is getting some public assistance in the form of tax breaks from the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency.

We haven’t been fans of this tax gimmick.

Got Cabana boys? Don’t have to disclose membership or revenues, but lots of local politicians are members. Is this the wisest investment of tax breaks?

Might be time to look again at COMIDA.
