McCain’s Health Plan - Go to the Emergency Room

Well - when you surround yourself with advisors like this…

Via OpenLeft

A health care policy advisor for the McCain campaign told a newspaper reporter that nobody in the United States is technically uninsured, because everyone has access to hospital emergency rooms.

“So I have a solution [to the health care crisis]. And it will cost not one thin dime,” John Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, told the Dallas Morning News in an interview published Thursday.

“The next president of the United States should sign an executive order requiring the Census Bureau to cease and desist from describing any American - even illegal aliens - as uninsured. Instead, the bureau should categorize people according to the likely source of payment should they need care. So, there you have it. Voila! Problem solved.”

Um - we wrote about an emergency room visit already.  Might want to reread it and imagine it used as health Insurance.

How out of touch can one be?

Pretty amazing stuff. Now the McCain people are trying to say he’s not an adviser.

Yeah - and all those lobbyists are “unofficial”

From the Dallas Morning News.

Mr. Goodman, who helped craft Sen. John McCain’s health care policy, said anyone with access to an emergency room effectively has insurance, albeit the government acts as the payer of last resort.

So people who help craft polices aren’t advisers?

Out of touch

This comment from Swampland (where I first read about this) nailed it I thought:

The implications are staggering…apparently:
1) I can toss the $8K ER bill for my son’s broken leg into the trash since it is “covered”,
2) I should have waited until my mitral valve prolapse was life-threatening and checked into the ER instead of waiting money on a cardiologist, and
3) looking back, we should have dispensed with seeing an ob-gyn during our pregnancies, since we could’ve popped em out in the ER “for free”.
The mind reels. Apparently I need another 6 (7?) houses in order for this to make any sense.
