The Greening of Monroe

In order to become a leader, a trend setter for the rest of the State and the nation, Monroe County has been making some changes with it’s fleet of vehicles and now a new pump station on Scottsville Rd near the airport. MPN has this to say:

The county, Rochester Institute of Technology and General Motors representatives officially announced the opening of the Green Fuel Station Aug. 21 on Scottsville Road, near the Greater Rochester International Airport.

The new hydrogen pumps, which dispense B-20 biodiesel fuel as well as several grades of ethanol fuel, is a further step in phasing out all traditional gas vehicles in the county’s fleet, according to County Executive Maggie Brooks.

By 2012, the entire county fleet, including sheriff’s cruisers, will be converted to alternative fuel vehicles. Now, the county has more than six dozen flex fuel and hybrid vehicles in use.

“Our work with alternate fuels is an indication of the potential for this region to be a national leader in this area,” Brooks said last week. “We’ve created a very real incubator here for alternative fuels.”

The college, through its Golisano Institute for Sustainability and Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies, and GM’s Honeoye Falls plant are partnering with the county on a pilot program to study the effectiveness of using such vehicles.

So, as a reader pointed out to me, “Spank ‘em when they’re bad and thank ‘em when they’re good.” Kudos to Maggie. This is good stuff.

Now let’s work on the schools…..

This is good stuff to the extent that ethanol is not one of the “alternative fuels.” Ethanol makes matters worse, not better.

I understand that you have very little energy gain with corn ethanol, but aren’t the emissions less? Other ethanols would certainly be a better choice, but why the blanket statement?-s’plain please

The emissions of CO2 are greater per BTU. Cars get worse mileage with ethanol so burn more of it to go the same distance.

Oh, then add the fact that the energy expended, mostly in diesel fuel, to farm the corn and distill the alcohol makes ethanol’s “energy gain” actually a net negative.

Ethanol from corn is big in this country because ADM gives a lot of money to fascists BushCo.
