Denver Dispatch 4 - The Monday Keynote
WOW! What a night. I can’t even begin to put into words what it feels like to be one of 10,000 or so Democrats in a room while Caroline Kennedy gives a brilliant speech about her family legacy.
The room was FILLED with energy and the sight was overwhelming. But, before I get into that, let me tell you about getting there…..
Yes, getting there. To make things “easier” shuttle busses from all the hotels transport delegates to the Pepsi Center. The problem is that the roads are completely gridlocked due to convention traffic and closed roads. So, what should have been a 10 minute walk, became an hour bus ride … a bus that wouldn’t let people off if they decided that they did want to walk. Once off the bus and enduring a very thorough security checkpoint, one would imagine the next simple thing to do would be to find a seat. That wouldn’t have been a problem if they didn’t have thousands more people attending than seats. So, in order to be on the floor I was SUPPOSED to be on, I would have to sit on the stairs and be shooed away by the fire marshal (Don’t ask how I know this) So, I was in the nosebleeds. But, what I learned was to A) walk and B) get there early.
By far the most moving part of the evening was when Senator Kennedy took the stage and promised to be around in January when Barack Obama is sworn in.
I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride in my party and in the movement to get us back on the right course. The connection between what we have accomplished in the past and what we will achieve in the future was very moving.
I am not going to go into what you a saw on TV, but I will say that the use of technology was VERY prominent. Behind the stage and to the right was the “Blogger Lounge” It was a very large area with a bunch of people working away vigorously on their laptops. (half of the “Lounge” can be seen on the right side of the picture )
Throughout the stadium, people were texting and sending photos like mad. It really made me realize the difference in the Presidential candidates. Barack Obama and supporters represent a new generation of thinkers and doers. We are indeed progressive in our visions and want to see this country be what it should be and not what it has become. John McSame is just that, the same as Bush. I wonder if the Republican Convention will let bloggers use the “internets”.
