Convention Day 1 – Part 3

Encounters.

Everything here has been relatively well organized by the New York Democratic Committee and despite what I reported earlier as long credentialing lines went quickly.. The New York delegation is in the same hotel as the California delegation. It’s a huge Sheraton that is right in the heart of the city and near it all. If you know Denver, you might be impressed to know that we are right on the 16th Street Mall. The location is great, but the hotel rooms have a bit to be desired.

The energy is palpable and the excitement of running into people who are shaping our country is like living in a dream world. While in the hotel I have talked to Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, Senator Charles Schumer, Governor David Patterson, State Senator Tom Duane, Assemblyman Joe Morelle and Congressman Charles Rangel. I also ran into Bill Press and several state level executives in the labor unions.

The room next door to me is filled with security guards for whoever is staying in the suite next to them. Now, I have a running joke with the overnight guard sitting in the hall. When I first saw him I said “You can’t tell me who’s in there can you?” and he smiled and said “No”. The next time I walked by, I said “Tell the Senator I said hello” and he laughed again. The following time I said “I hope you and the Governor have a good night” I figure that eventually I will get the right title and he will give it away in his expression. Then I will move onto first names: “Tell Congressman Mike that I said Good Night”.
