Denver Dispatch 2 - More from the Convention day 1
Convention Day 1 – part 2
So after our breakfast this morning, I headed over to the convention center where I attended the DNC LGBT Caucus. I was unable to stay for the guest speaker, Senator Tammy Baldwin, but I did hear Colorado Senator Jennifer Vega, Colorado Representative Mark Farrandino and DNC Secretary Alice Germond. It was an empowering experience and as you can see by the photo below, the place was packed.
After the caucus, I headed over to the National Education Association/American Federation of Teachers (NEA/AFT) luncheon where I heard Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius speak.
She herself was a teacher and told a great story. There was a company that was looking in three different states to put it’s factories. When the Governor asked the CEO what he needed to know in order to pick Kansas, he said “Your students’ test scores”. She asked why and he replied “Because I know that studies show that the higher the test scores in an area, the less errors the workforce makes. And, if there are less errors, I have to spend less money fixing them” What an important lesson to the value of education. Unlike Maggie Brooks, Governor Sebelius understands the economics of quality education. By the way, Kansas got the factories; Monroe County almost got the unFAIR Plan.
