Dan Maffei article in D&C
There was a detailed and lengthy article in the Democratic and Chronicle today about the NY-25th Congressional race that features Democrat Dan Maffei vs Republican Dale Sweetland.
I thought the article was comprehensive and as detailed as we can expect from the Democratic and Chronicle. What I don’t understand is the title of the article. It was called:
In the print edition,
Political advisers vie in the 25th
On-line
Democrats fund Maffei in race with Sweetland for 25th District
I mean if both Maffei and Sweetland were former boy scouts would the title “ex-boyscouts” vie in the 25th. The on-line title I find more troubling. Republicans are not funding Dale Sweetland? I’m sure the D&C editors are referring to the support the DCCC is providing Maffei as part of a package all WNY Dem candidates are receiving. Still, the head of the RNCC, Tim Cole had this to say:
The DCCC’s Republican counterpart has far fewer funds on hand but believes defending seats in the Northeast is “a huge priority for us,” said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Cole was on a swing of western New York districts last week, traveling with Rep. Randy Kuhl, R-Hammondsport, Steuben County.
“It’s tougher terrain,” Cole said of the Maffei-Sweetland match-up.
“We’re certainly not going to concede the 25th.”
So If I look up all of Sweetland’s donors, which party am I going to find? The story here isn’t who is funding candidates, but rather GOP donations (DCCC vs RNCC) have dried up with the Dems holding a commanding lead so they can provide additional support independent of the funds raised by the individual candidates.
So why is funding part of the article title? Because it is a manufactured issue designed to appear controversial and solicit interest.
I’m assuming/hoping there will be additional articles coming covering Massa vs Kuhl in NY-29th and after the primary in NY-25th where hopefully, it will be Powers v Lee.
Looking forward to lengthy and detailed articles in for those districts as well -with better titles.
