Keeping WROC 950 AM’s Progressive Talk Format

Well, it’s on. Last night, Metro Justice heard enough complaints from people about WROC’s format change from Progressive Talk to Sports Talk, that they took a little time out from their already very busy schedule to set up a web page where you can e-mail WROC’s parent company Entrecom to let them know you support progressive talk. It’s starting off with a bang– they just got the word out last night and already have 95 emails from supporters. The page also provides a little back story that I never knew:

Michael Doyle helped WROC change its format to progressive talk several years ago. The local management has supported the progressive talk format. They need to hear from their loyal listeners at this time.

There is at least one other sports talk radio station in town (1280AM) but WROC 950AM is the only progressive talk radio outlet on the Rochester airwaves.

We’re working on further action, and we’ll keep you posted, but in the meantime, click here to send an e-mail! If you decide to add your own message, keep it passionate but respectful, please.

Metro Justice also needs folks to come on down to the office during the day next week to fax the emails over to Entrecom and enter data. Call them at 325-2560 to let them know when you can come. Anyone up for an RT day (RT lunch hour?) down there?

You may have noticed that WROC is still Progressive Talk as of today. Some sources were telling us 8/1 was when the flip would happen, but two sources I spoke with from WROC yesterday said that it would be more like Labor Day. This also corresponds with what Bill Press reported in RT’s interview with him. So we’ve got a little time, but we’ll have to act fast to convince them otherwise– the train is leaving the station. More soon…

Update: Apparently this is a local decision, not from corporate. All the more reason to let them know they’ve got our support– they still need to answer to corporate.

Glad Metro is getting on board. Of course, Amy Goodman’s show, which they sponsor, would no longer be available

That remains to be seen–apparently MJ is in talks with WROC about the future of Democracy Now. My understanding is it’s being sponsored by someone, so I would think that would keep it safe.

Yep - I’;m sure it will fit right in on a sports show.
Ultimately the sponsorship expires so nothing is guaranteed.

Is there someone out there who could help with an op ed about the news that 950AM is turning to sports? happened onto your web site while looking for the website that has been trying to get people to brag about Rochester. I wanted to build on that — how Rochester has so much to offer it even has a progressive talk show — something only X places have. I’ve been trying to find out how many markets there really are, as well as any other data I can bundle together.

I once called to complain that the Sabres were pre-empting progressive talk. The person I spoke to said that’s where the money is.

I am glad that I found you folks during my web search because I did not feel good after I talked to someone from MJ last week. I did so because I thought they sponsored DN. The person sounded surprisingly negative about the prospects of any attempts to affect the change from progressive talk to sports. I feel better now that I know MJ has created a web site to let 950 know how so many of us feel. Who is going to publicize this catastrophe to the local media? As I said I could use help with writing an OP ED. Note: I am not a member of MJ pr RT.

One more thing - how nice that the local market can catered too all the way from California.

I’m sure it has to do with resources. MJ is a wonderful organization. Probably stretched too thin.

Metro Justice is funded to do specific things, and this isn’t one of them. What they’ve done so far is because it’s the right thing to do. They can help, but we’ll need to much of it outside of MJ. We’re making some calls…

Once again, we’re the ones we’ve been waiting for.

Which just means that LOCAL republicans KNOW that LOCAL Democrats and WFP Candidates can’t be beat - and that’s why they’ll constantly bring up California electeds when the rest of us are discussing LOCAL issues.

The monkey carries the wrench and his name is Elmer. Don’t let him derail the conversation. Just ignore him like the rest of us do.

Jon at Metro Justice is an exceptional contributor to the betterment of our lives.

This is just another example of MJ’s unselfish, caring, tireless efforts to AWAKEN the masses and MOTIVATE us to create CHANGE.

That’s what it’s all about. I second BTP - we ARE the ONES we’ve been waiting for. We’re also the ONES they worry about.

MOTIVATE - CREATE - CHANGE. Call Metro Justice today - 325-2560

Tell them Maggie sent you.

I’m glad I found this webpage as I was taken by surprise hearing sports the Tuesday after Labor Day instead of Press, Miller and Schultz. I’m really ticked off that 950AM dropped the progressive format in favor of sports being that, as pointed out above, there is already a sports talk station in town. With the progressive talk, 950AM had a great niche that’s hard to find in smaller cities. Now I have to try to tune into Buffalo’s progressive talk which only comes in when I’m on the west side of Roc. I too will be sending an email letting them know my thoughts on the matter.
