You take the low road and I’ll take the high road

One thing about living in Monroe County is that you see a lot of ridiculous political attacks. The famous terrorists with drivers’ licenses mailer that the Republicans mailed out last fall is one classic example, but I’ve heard tell of other sillier ones from back in those dark days before blogs and scanners were widespread. One reportedly featured a big picture of toilet with the heading “So-and-so will flush the town down the toilet.” I never got to see that one and, to be honest, I feel a bit cheated. So it was with great pleasure that I viewed this new ad from John McCain, the first truly absurd ad of this presidential campaign. It begins with footage of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

We always seem to get a lot of comments about YouTube ads, so I’m curious what readers think of this one and of Obama’s response below.

well, we know britney is bad for our country because she backs bush. i think paris is likely to be soft on crime, so that is also bad. all in all i guess it is an informative ad. maybe obama can respond by tying mccain to michael richards or don imus.

  2. Here’s that classic video of Britney saying she supports Bush by the way.

Not that I think Britney should be part of the political debate.

Speaking as a member of the press, John McCain is actually the more friendly candidate and campaign when it comes to getting statements and questions answered. Obama’s campaign is being run like MySpace. To get to his energy staffer we had to go through his Senate Office who eventually gave us his campaign phone number after repeated calls…I’m not sure its is a good thing for the political process, when the media has no reliable way to access a Presidential candidate without knowing someone in the campaign.

And it’s not like we’re a small publication in some little town…well the little town part is true but we have 100,000 plus readers for our Renewable Energy coverage. If the Obama campaign doesn’t want to talk with us that’s their business but it’s not very encouraging when the candidate who’s “for renewable energy” doesn’t want to talk to the biggest publication in that industry.

  4. Who do you write for?

It’s easy for McCain to open to the press because the press is on his side. Any mistakes he makes are ignored, whereas with Obama, the media will invent mistakes and controversies where there are none.

Maybe that’s the old maverick McCain. “Sen. John McCain, American war hero and admired political maverick, as well as presumed Republican nominee for president, had a message for Elisabeth Bumiller, the venerated New York Times reporter, along with the rest of the media assigned to travel with him the week of July 20.

“What do you want, you little jerks?” McCain said to Bumiller and those behind her, as the press surged forward on the “Straight Talk” Boeing 737 on July 21.”

  6. Just to be clear — I don’t mean to imply that you or your publication are in any way biased. But the overall national press atmosphere is so hostile to Democrats that I’d be wary of the media in general if I were a Democrat involved in a presidential campaign.

    I hear this from both sides, “They’re playing politics!” {Obama ad}

News alert for all you Americans out there, they’re politicians engaged in a political process seeking a political job that will involve using a political system to advance a cause. Somehow we alowed the right to get us into this evilspeak that all politics is bad. Politics is the process by which a democracy works! Another case of the right leads and the left follows.

I for one like it when politicans engage in politics, kinda like when I go to the doctor and she does doctoring stuff…

I just hope Obama doesn’t continue to take the bait like he started to on this one.

  8. Maybe your notion of politics differs from mine, or maybe you’re just being contrarian — I don’t see how pictures of Britney and Paris add much to the political discourse.

  9. Publius says:

They don’t, but if you define that as politics you’ve drunk the right-wing kool-aid.

Perverting the truth, or insinuating innuendos is not politics, it’s perverting the truth and insinuating innuendos.

Politics is a process by which we choose our representatives and officials.

The right starting using the smear terminology “playing politics” whenever the left argued a point they couldn’t respond to logically, and the left dutifully followed suit. Case in point-Obama’s response ad, accussing McCain of “playing politics!”.

The right leads and the left follows.

It’s all very Orwellian.(…or Lakoffian perhaps?) but hardly contrarian.

Ok, but “fighting back” on the enemy’s terms doesn’t work.

Remember Kerry “fighting back” when he accepted the nomination?

    “John Kerry reporting for duty!”

    Big salute.

    Big yawn.

It was all over that night. You guys should have saved your cash and given the dough to Lollipop farm. Those dogs had a chance.

And so Kerry fought back on their terms and died on his feet. Who cared? Bush won. Game over. Liberals cried foul, and we’re at war, with a crumbling economy and no health care.

Remember what George C. Scott says at the beginning of the movie “Patton”?

Your job is to stay alive, let the other “bastard” die for his country. The idea is to defeat the enemy, not die for your cause.

Liberals are good at dying for their cause while the republicans win and rule the waves.

The left won’t win until they start to understand they need to set the rules of engagement.
