Time for “bye-bye”, Wayne Zyra

Well, lookie here, the D&C gets it right again. I mean, if you’re going to unload excess baggage, wouldn’t it make sense that Zyra should be the next to go before he does any more damage?

If Wayne Zyra, the Republican president of the Monroe County Legislature, was trying to send the message that nothing has really changed in the post-Steve Minarik era of the local GOP, he succeeded Tuesday night.

By adding banker John Bartolotta to the Monroe Community College Board of Trustees over the reasonable objections of minority Democrats, it was the GOP as usual. Republican lawmakers used their majority muscle, though just a week ago Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks vowed the emergence of a “New Republican Party” after the abrupt departure of Minarik as county GOP chairman.

No, I don’t think Wayne Zyra is who you want as co-pilot for the “New Republican Party”. Way to go D&C!

The D&C seems to buy Maggie’s rhetoric about a new Republican Party, but I’d suggest the proof is in the pudding. While she pays lipservice to a new party, we all know Minarik wouldn’t have gone if he didn’t want to. So they framed this to look as if she was making changes, knowing that they were losing FAIR, the domestic partners issue, and popularity in our county. But the real question is whether she will run things (or Steve in the background) with a “business as usual” approach. Here’s the first evidence that she will. If she were acting as the head of the party intent on making real change, she would have handled this appointment differently. Don’t tell me there haven’t been meetings and phone calls plotting the secret appointment, keeping it from the Dems and refusing to let the public in. And definitely don’t tell me she wasn’t involved. Zyra’s never had an original thought - so whoever has set policy for this administration before, be it Maggie or Stevie, has continued to stay the course.

Let’s pass on the Republican spin created Kool Aid.

Nice catch on the editorial and I’m glad the D&C wrote it. However, one supposed dramatic action (Minarik) does not make a trend and Louis is correct in offering some critical analysis that the D&C would be wise to heed.

We didn’t get to this divisive place over night it will take a while to get away from it.

Or put another way just because you take a single step in the right direction doesn’t mean you get credit for the entire trip.

Maggie is an example of what — 25 years ago — Bertram Gross called friendly fascism. Authoritarian power with friendly face. Nothing more.

It’s not like the republicans were going to win the FAIR issue and they demurred to avoid conflict. The details of the settlement are not public yet are they? Bet there is a catch

Yep - wouldn’t want negative press during Campaign season when Maggie is trying to get Cheryl Dinalfo reelected now would we.

Oh no FAIR plan? Wonder where their plan B was remember the plan B that Maggie doesn’t want to share (or create?). Where are the Maggie quotes on that?

If they ACTUALLY worked on a Plan B they would be able to release it.

I don’t understand this: “wouldn’t it make sense that Zyra should be the next to go before he does any more damage?”

Isn’t Zyra an elected official, elected by the citizens of his district? If he is Prez of the Monroe County Legislature, didn’t he get elected to that position by the Legislature itself? Who is going to make him “go”?

I would think that those who elected him prez could accomplish that.
I’ll look into it in my spare time.

Paige - are you actually suggesting that the GOP majority thinks for itself? Pavlov’s dogs probably think more than the GOP Legislature majority.

Seriously - to suggest that there is no influence from the local GOP party leadership I beleive is incorrect.

From a former County legislator: Zyra serves at the pleasure of the county leg-if 15 of the 29 were to vote against him, he could be removed as president. If the Leg (read: Magggie Brooks) is sincere in their wish to change the Republican party in Monroe county, it could be done.

I hate to be the constant naysayer here, but they could do it if…the big if…they were sincere in their desire to change the local Republican party. This group - both as a group (think scheming and plotting on the FAIR plan, (if memory serves) delaying the release of the budget until after elections, the PD fiasco, the appointment of the hacks to the Board of Trustees, etc. - and as individuals (watch them smirking in videos as the public implores them to do the right thing time and again) has absolutely no desire to change.

    The old joke:
Question - How many therapists does it take to change a lightbulb?
Answer - one, but the lightbulb has to want to change.

These dim bulbs don’t want to change, folks. And, as I keep whining about lately, there’s no concerted effort by MCDC or Morelle to promote new challengers or get a consistent, clear message out about the damage these folks have done.

It’s alright, Louis. You can be the naysayer. I realize that “if” is the operative word here.
