NYCLU, ACLU to File Lawsuit to Stop Warrantless Wiretapping Law

I just thought you might like to know:

July 10, 2008 - The American Civil Liberties Union and its New York affiliate, the New York Civil Liberties Union, will file a landmark lawsuit today after the president signs the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (FAA) into law. The lawsuit asks the court to stop the government from enforcing the new unconstitutional wiretapping law, which will give the Bush administration unfettered power to spy on Americans without warrants or judicial oversight. The FAA, passed by the Senate yesterday and the House in June, legalizes and goes even further than many of the illegal practices employed by the National Security Agency as part of its secret spying program approved by the president in late 2001.

That this lame-duck president could get this Act signed into law is a sad commentary on our governmental system. Didn’t we shift the power in 2006? I’m not buying that, “We don’t have a big enough majority”, line anymore. It’s like the Dems are not even trying. Color me p***ed-off.

I was planning to donate to the Barack Obama campaign. I believe now I will donate the same amount to the ACLU and write Barack Obama a letter telling him why I won’t be donating.

I can certainly see why you would do that. Nonetheless, I think we need to get him elected, so as much as I am disappointed in his “yes” vote, we will probably still be donating to the campaign.

Obama is secretly a Republican recruited by Dick Cheney. Cheney knew the only way to elect a Republican president after Bush was to have the candidate run undercover as a Democrat :)
I didn’t know this till today, but apparently Nancy Pelosi is also a undercover Republican.
Btw - Harry Reid is actually a space alien :)

I’m p***ed off too. Extremely. I found a website, I think it was Progressive Democrats, that has an “escrow” campaign for Obama donations/pledges, holding the money in abeyance of his taking action on this issue. Tilting at windmills, maybe. Symbolic gesture, maybe. I like it, though.

This FISA bs is one of those moments where I think I’m seeing the true color of ALL politicians — none of them are really on our side. One of those moments where it becomes clear just what kind of clothes the king is wearing.

Even though I want to see Obama win the election against McCain, and even though I will vote for Obama, it still seems necessary for me to register my displeasure with his actions in the only way that has any impact whatsoever. Yes, my paltry contribution is insignificant by itself, but if many people do so, it might have an impact.

And what’s that I read? Obama’s fundraising numbers have dropped each of the last three months. Hmmm, I wonder why? Could it be he is pissing off many of his true supporters? Yes, there are probably other reasons for the drop in fundraising. Will he get the message? Will it matter? We shall see.

Further, I think that given my limited funds for political contributions, donating to the ACLU is a higher priority for me right now.

  7. [...] with the passage of telecom retroactive immunity provision of the FISA act just passed by Congress. The ACLU steps in and sues. See they understand, all too well that the Constitution applies equally to everyone and you [...]
