Hello darkness, my old friend, 950 AM format to change?

Well, I’m told that effective August 1st Entercom has decided to change the format of 950AM progressive talk radio to something else.

I have some additional calls to to check out some additional details and will share them but I wanted to get you started with their switchboard number for tomorrow morning.

Switchboard: (585) 423-2900 (Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:30pm)

Also ask your friends in the business community to commit to advertising on 950 Only if it remains in it’s current format.

    Agreed.

Why do liberals see 950 as an alternative to biased, appeal to the lowest base, insulting, nonsensical, one-sided talk radio when it’s the same thing just coming from the other end?

All the things liberals complain about WHAM and Fox news, one gets from Air America only on a differrent frequency. Neither of them are journalism, they’re therapy, not for free thinkers, but for people who need reaffirmation.

It doesn’t help the liberal cause to be just as mean spirited and ill-informed as Bill O’Reilly or Bob Lonsberry. And anyone who thinks Stephanie Miller is any different really, really, really needs to listen to her with an open mind and fact checker.

The true alternative is objective news reporting.

That would only be an alternative if it actually existed. At the national level, it does not.

I agree, objective news reporting would be nifty, but right now, the traditional media largely regurgitates right wing memes. I’ve seen much more about Obama being a “flip-flopper”, than McCain’s easily documented pandering on issue after issue.

Plus, progressive radio provides a way to incubate progressive pundits who counter the right wing nuts that traditional media gives airtime to. I just heard Ed Shultz, for example, doing a good job of stopping a wingnut from saying those on the left WANT the U.S. to fail in Iraq.

You don’t hear anchors and talk show hosts doing that, they just tend to nod along.

  9. Natasha says:

Some Air America programs sound similar to Rush and Hannity when hosts shout or get nasty–Randi Rhodes and Ed Schultz. For the most part, the programs substantiate their points with facts. Rachel Maddow, Thom Hartmann, and the ring of Fire are just a few examples of this.

for those who speak of “objectivity” it is important to note that the “fairness” doctrine, in place but sporadically enforced for many years was effectively destroyed by the Reagan administration Officially the fairness doctrine is not operative and hasn’t been since the early 80’s. It was the silencing of the fairness doctrine that brought the Rush Limbaughs of the world to talk radio. They could not have gotten on the air in the format they use until the fairness doctrine was abolished . Our conservative friends deserve all the blame for this one.

speaking of WXXI I was just told they are attempting to take over our access channel out here on the west side. Why are they doing that? Doesn’t sound too progressive to me

This story is starting to make the rounds on the west side. Seems that WXXI is stone walling anyone who asks questions. Telling them they don’t have to answer questions? Does this seem familiar? It seems like the same stealth tactics used in the attempt to get the Greece school district to take over public access. XXI hardly has a great record running city 12 and PBS has a very weak record for defending free speech and critical programming. anyones who doubts this can read David Barsamian The Decline and Fall of Public Broadcasting. Any of you XXI lurkers what’s going on here? XXI is not even the west side service area?
