Guon on MCC Prez Selection: Taking the “Political” Out Of “Political Tool”
Building on airbare8’s spot-on analysis of MCC Board Chair Richard Guon, this great article by D&C writer Gary Craig, is funny:
The board is entirely Republican, and the controversy arose when trustees continued to support former County Legislator and lawyer Bill Smith, a Pittsford Republican, after two search committees, faculty and students all decided he was not qualified for the job. The board ultimately deadlocked in a vote between Smith and local businessman Dennis Kessler, also a Republican.
Presidential committees chose as finalists two community college presidents with ample experience in higher education.
One dropped out as allegations of political favoritism grew during the search, and the other did not receive a single vote from the trustees.
Ironically, having lost two candidates with higher education experience as a possible full-time president, the trustees Monday selected Tyree, a man with extensive higher education experience, as an interim president.
Asked why such experience seemed more valuable for an interim than for a full-time president, Guon said he did not plan to talk about the failed search process because it is in the past.
I wish I could get away with not having to answer for my mistakes.
And dang, isn’t it nice to see reporters getting the big picture and asking followup questions?
