BREAKING: BRUNO NOT RUNNING FOR REELECTION!!!

More later.

OK it is later (7:36). here is the deal - via the magic of the telephone we got to post a breaking story that Bruno is not running for reelection. Wonderful use of technology. Words to my ears when another source called and as they were relaying the information - said - “Oh, you already have it up”.

I guess it is time to get out while the getting is good. From the NY Post

Bruno has presided over a sharp decline in GOP fortunes in recent years as his majority slipped from a high of 38 members to the current low of 32, just one vote shy of losing majority status.

Here is a really long article in the Albany Times Union if you are interested or a really short article by the Democrat and Chronicle.

Frankly was this really a surprise? Bruno is nearly 80 and simply stated what is left for him to do besides conclude the FBI investigation?

My sources also tell me that Bruno’s staff have quietly moved on to other activities and have been replaced by folks tied to Guiliani.

Yeah, Mr “If I can’t make there, how about I’ll try here” trying to get a leg up on the NY GOP.

So who replaces him on the ballot and does that GOP person have a Democratic opponent?

would Robach be in line as a possible replacement? I’m hoping not, cause that would be something pretty good to run on.

Rumor on the street is he RESIGNED! Something to do with that big investigation - so this could mean special election - which would mean results before November!

I don’t think he resigned. Even if he did, the governor wouldn’t call a special election. Aubertine left his assembly seat vacant after he won the 48th SD in February, and even then the governor didn’t call a special election. Why would he call one four months later now that the session is finished? And I think it might be better to wait until November so that Premo can build up some name recognition.

I can’t decide whether he’s opting out because of the FBI investigation or unwillingness to be in the minority come 2009.

You’re right on with the Giuliani infiltration stlo7. The Daily News picked up on the smell of him in Albany just a few days ago…now it makes more sense:

    State GOP Exec Director Quits

Allison Coccia, who has served as executive director of the state GOP since December 2006, has abruptly resigned to “pursue other career opportunities,” according to a GOP source.

No further details about her next move were immediately available.

She will be replaced by Matt Walter, who worked in Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno’s press shop for just over 11 years and has been serving for the past year as the state party’s communications director.

There’s no replacement yet for Walter’s old job.

This move is seen as recognition on state Chairman Joe Mondello’s part that preserving the Senate majority this fall is tantamount and might require more insider knowledge of New York than Coccia, the former political director of the Pennsylvania GOP, was able to provide.

Coccia was hand-picked by for the ED job by Mondello at a time when he was new to the state chairman’s job and anxious to make his own imprint on the organization.

Bruno and others were pushing John Haggerty, a former aide to Gov. George Pataki who also worked on Mayor Bloomberg’s 2005 re-election campaign, for the job.

But Haggerty was too controversial for some Republicans, in part due to his efforts to squelch Tom Ognibene’s GOP primary challenge to Bloomberg and also because of a longstanding battle in the Queens Republican Party.

The state GOP is in flux these days, with persistent reports that various factions of the party would like to oust Mondello.

Rudy Giuliani’s camp has denied that he’s interested in installing longtime aide Tony Carbonetti as state chairman.

But Mayor Bloomberg hasn’t denied a recent meeting with another potential Mondello replacement (at least in the eyes of the Pataki allies who dislike Mondello), retiring Rep. Tom Reynolds.

So now it looks like Giuliiani is repositioning himself to run for Governor, will load the house floor with his “insider” New York hacks who couldn’t get him the Presidential nomination, but “know New York SO well” that they can swing the Governor’s Mansion…all the while rebuilding the state GOP and bringing in the pond topper Tom Reynolds, who “only wanted to spend more time with his grandchildren” so men like Mark Foley can’t.

Boy - these republicans are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with all these “has been” republicans running from indictments on one side of the room, while attempting to reorganize their “cartel” on the other side of the room.

Keep shining that spot light on them! Thanks for the heads up! At least now the gig can be exposed for exactly what it is. I anticipate a plea deal for Bruno too, when in actuality, he and Reynolds should be forced to share a cell! Then maybe Tommy Boy can play horsey with ‘Ol Joe so he can still keep up his equine prowess. Dirty job, but I can think of no one more qualified - unless they rope Minarik in on the big “where’s the missing GOP money?” scandal!
