Obama event at Salena’s
Exile on Ericsson St. notified us earlier this evening about an Obama campaign get-together at Salena’s Mexican Grill. It was a chance to regroup before the voter registering of the summer and the campaigning in the fall gets fully underway. I happened to stop by to watch some of the speakers.
Adam Bello, the executive director of the Monroe County Democratic Committee, talked a little bit about the down-ballot races and said what we have all known for months: Monroe County is critical this November when it comes to congressional and state legislative races. He urged that people start volunteering to help with the voter registration drives over the next few months (all of their contact information is on their website).
Ken Preston, a pledged delegate for Obama, was also among those who talked briefly to the few dozen people who had assembled there. He mentioned that he has been trying to get Obama to make a campaign stop in Monroe County, but he said, “He’s campaigning in the battleground states… Colorado, Missouri, West Virginia…”
Halfway through his speech, Preston moved the focus onto unifying the Democratic Party. He said plainly, “We have to be respectful of Senator Clinton… some of her supporters are in mourning.” He also said that while the speculation of Clinton being on the ticket may be interesting to talk about, it is a distraction when it comes to the main goal of ensuring that her supporters transfer their enthusiasm to the presumptive nominee.
He summed up the crowd’s overall concern about unity quite well: “If any registered Democrat tells you that they’re voting for John McCain, call 9-1-1.”
Salena’s was a great forum for the post-primary party: not only do they have great food, but they also donated $1,000 to the Obama campaign earlier today.
